Nick
I had no choice. She wasn't going to listen to me. I'm the bad guy in her eyes. She doesn't tell me about my children. And I'm the bad guy?
I have to do something. I have a plan. Will it work, I don't know. But I'm willing to try.
I knocked on her wooden door. A pause. I heard no foot steps, no voices, no movement, no nothing. Just silence. Did she leave town? I knocked again, louder this time.
The door opened. "I heard you the first time." She said. Her eyes were blood shot red. She's been drinking maybe? I didn't smell alcohol. Crying?
She opened the door wider. One of the boys stood next to her. Looking up at me in terror. His eyes were red also. I knew for sure, it was crying. The thought if them crying, irritated me. I had to push away the anger and play nice or else they won't go along with me.
They weren't any packed bags next to them. "Where's your stuff?" I asked Miley.
Then the other twin came walking up to us with bags in his hand and around his shoulder. He sat the bags down next to Miley.
"Ready." he said to her, ignoring me.
Miley then took some of the bags in her hand, and they boys took some. They followed me out to the parking lot.
"What happened to your bike?" Miley asked, examining my Honda Sivic.
"I traded it in." I opened the trunk for them to but their bags, and backpacks inside. "I had to, we couldn't all fit on it."
"I have a car too, you know."
"Yes I know. But see, my car actually works."
She rolled her eyes away from me. She helped the boys strap in the backseat and made her way to the front next to me.
"Where are we going Nick?" She asked.
"Please don't ask any questions. It's a long drive." I started the car.
The car drive was silent, except for the sniffling coming from the backseat and they sound of blowing mucus into a napkin.
Light snoring also came from the backseat and Miley glared out the window staring at every street sign and store we passed, trying to figure out where we are and where we're going.
One of the boys sneezed from the back seat.
"Are you okay?" I asked him.
"Don't talked to him." Miley snapped around at me and gave him another tissue. "Here Niles, clean your nose."
"Niles?" I repeated. His face was softer than the other twin. His hair was shorter and straighter.
"Yes?" He squeaked at me. I looked through the rearview mirror and saw his big brown eyes looking at me cautiously.
"Bless you." I saw referring to his sneeze.
"Thank you." He smiles.
MileyThe sun took forever to fade down. Yet we we're still driving to our, unknown destination. Caleb was knocked out sleep, and Niles passed out a couple minutes after him.
I was getting sleepy too, but wasn't about to sleep not know where I'm going. I need to watch out for the street I know how I'm going to get there and I'm going to get back.
I dont even know what his intentions are with us. I don't know what he wants.
"Are we almost there?" I asked him.
No reply.
"Where are we going?" I asked him.
Again, no reply.
I pushed back in my seat. "Well, can you at least stop at a hotel? We've been driving all day."
"I've been driving all day. You've been sitting."
"Well, it's torture sitting here. It's hot, the boys are sleeping, and Niles already has a cold. Can we just stop?"
He ignored me again.
"Your unbelievable Nick."
"We're almost there, you can hang on a little while longer."
Moments of silence passed between us.
"Have you told them?" He asked nodding towards the boys.
"Told them what?"
"Told them who I am. Told them I'm their father. Told them that you lied."
"I didn't lie."
"Alright, then what do they know. What did you tell them about their father when they asked you?"
"I told them the truth. I told them we didn't get along and we
separated."
He turned to me with a confused look before turning back to the rode. "And that was it? They didn't ask for anymore information?"
"Of course they did. Especially Caleb. He asked about things you like, he'd compare to see if you and him we're alike. He'd ask for pictures and everything."
"Did you have pictures?"
"I had a few. They where childhood pictures. Of when we were kids."
"Does he recognize me?" Nick's voice was low.
I shrug. "Maybe. He asked alot of questions about you. He knows something up."
"He's a smart kid." He shifted in his seat to pull out his cellphone. "Kevin just had a daughter."
I turned to him. "Really?"
He handed me his cell phone. On the screen there was a smiling baby. "He's obsessed with her." He reached over and flicked the screen channeling a new picture. This one had the baby being cuddled by a tanned brown headed girl.
"Oh, my gosh... She's adorable." I show Nick the picture. "Who's the girl?"
He smiles. "That's Dani, Kevin's wife."
"Awe, she looks like his type." I flicked the screen and saw the baby being held by a smiling Joe. I cover my mouth as it fell open. I haven't seen Joe in years. I sniffed back tears.
Nick leaned over me to see what I was looking at. Then rested his hand on my knee. "You know, he almost cried when I told him about you."
I turned to him. "He knows?" I wiped my eyes.
"Yeah. He knows about the boys too. I made him swore not to tell. I trust him."
I nodded, flicking through the pictures. I came across a picture of Demi and my Dad holding the baby.
I gave the phone back to Nick, I can't look at any more pictures. I pull a tissue out of Niles's bag and wiped my eyes.
Nick rubbed his hand around my knee to for his comfort. "I'm sorry."
"It's okay. I'm okay. I just miss everyone."
The car stopped.
"We're here." Nick said.
