Flashback

(Before the Particle Accelerator Explosion)

I didn't know what to make of it. The note that sat in my locker from some admirer. It was Valentines Day. And don't take this the wrong way but I always thought it was gay. Like the happy gay kind. You know? Anyway, some kid scribbled the words neatly on this piece of paper that held chocolate hearts in the envelope. How they got it in was beyond me. They might know Lucy, my best friend since elementary school and still was in junior year, who knew the code to my locker. It read:

Anashé, your eyes are as silver as the diamonds in my rock, you keep me sane when you shine and you make me shine when you smile, will you please be my valentine? with love, your secret admirer. (ps. i hope you're not allergic to my chocolate hearts)

As sweet as it was, I really wanted to know who it came from. Was it a guy or a girl? You never knew these days. There were so many open LGBT people at this school that you would have no idea who could have written the note. I spent the whole day wondering who it could be. All through History, I thought maybe it was Ben. So, I asked him once the lesson let out.

"Nah, it wasn't me, sorry," he said.

"Damn. You didn't see who put it in my locker?" I questioned.

It was possible he could have seen something. But he hadn't. Grr.

A double in English class bored me to doodle in my sketch book. There were cats, horses, girls, boys - I even tried to do Alec, who was transgender.

"That's really impressive," Megan mentioned. They always sat next to me between Gina and Bianca on the table next to ours.

"Thanks," I smiled at them.

"Is that Alec? Alec come here," they waved him over.

Oh gosh no. Alec came by and saw my drawing of him.

"Oh, that's so cool," he commented. "Can I take a photo of that?"

"Sure," I let him.

Snap! Alec thanked me as I quickly mentioned to Megan how someone snuck into my locker. They hadn't seen anyone either. Neither had Alec. He sat in the empty seat by me as we kept on watching The Bridge to Terabithia even though I knew what happened.

All throughout recess, I couldn't figure it out. Lucy was in my Science double lesson and she didn't say a word as she promised she wouldn't tell.

"You've got to give me something," I begged.

"Here," she handed the beaker.

"Come on, Lucy. Just a hint."

"Okay, it's a human."

"Helpful," I commented.

"You're welcome."

"Just give me one?"

Lucy glared at me.

"Please?" I pressed my hands together.

"Fine. They are in some of your classes."

"Well, that's good."

Eventually, the bell gave out and lunchtime came.

Some of us generally got to the locker room earlier to change before the bell rung out so that we could change before some other girls came in. It was generally for the self-conscious shy girls who didn't want to be seen. And I was one of them without a doubt. I was quite petite, and I hated it. I always wanted to be curvy like some girls are in class. I even crawled into the toilet stalls to have a bit more privacy. But it was then I overheard a conversation about me by some of the girls.
