Myra pulled out a chair and joined her co-worker, Natty in the coffee room. They were taking a little break, catching up on one of their old gossips.
Cliff Tristram strolled in, walked straight to the coffee machine. "Myra? Your customers are waiting," he said firmly, pouring himself a cup.
Oh God, Myra groaned inwardly. Of course he won't allow her a moment of peace even in here, she rolled her eyes. She had only just got here, thinking she'll have a few minutes to regroup before going back to the pile of work on her desk. Now she'd have to deal with those needy customers first. "I'll see to it right away, Cliff," she put on a false smile to the short balding man she called her boss.
"You do that quickly, we can't afford to keep clients waiting, that's not why we pay you, you know. Time is money," he smiled disparagingly and left.
"He's so mean," Natty muttered in annoyance.
"You can say that again."
Ugh! How she detested him. He was nasty, overly critical and the thought that he's denied her promotion more than once for a year and a half now irked her even further.
"Talk to you later, Nat."
Natty nodded in response.
She pushed back her seat and got up, her coffee unfinished she walked swiftly to her office.
Myra had been working in this bank as a Client Service Rep. in Nantucket straight out of college for seven years now. It felt like the same routine everyday; developing a good rapport with the customers, connecting with the customers, ensuring customers are connected to the appropriate team, making sure they're happy and satisfied and blah blah blah.
Here, it was all about the customers and she was bored to death working extremely hard trying to please everyone. She wanted a different job, something new in a different city, something challenging, something she would love more and of course a guy...most especially a great guy. Truth be told, she would absolutely welcome a total 360 degree turnaround in her life right now.
She sighed. She had never really been in love. She had met Zach a year after she got a job here, she liked him but not so much, he was always so overprotective and it drove her crazy. They were together for two years and then he broke up with her for no apparent reason. She was in fact relieved, glad to be frank!
She dated Matt for a year and a half. He was an aspiring actor who, when he couldn't get work, became a couch potato and that crumbled their relationship...lazy ass guys was a total turnoff for her.
Then there was the one she dated for nine months, Jarod, he left her for another girl. Myra was devastated only because the girl was her colleague, apart from that, she was happy to see him go.
She hadn't been in a serious relationship since then, not that she was avoiding dating another Nantucket guy; she promised she wouldn't do any long term relationship except the guy has really captured her heart, has made her fall deeply in love with him. Nevertheless she had been dating but nothing special and now she was tired of dating different guys every now and then.
She attended to her waiting customers expeditiously, did some paper work and after they had left, a quick glance at her phone which had silently been vibrating during the meeting and she decided to reciprocate a call back to her cousin in Boston.
Karen answered on the first ring. "I was wondering when you'd call back."
"Nice to hear from you too, Karen," she smile.
"I'm sorry. How are you? I've been eager to let you know about this job opening I saw this morning..."
"Really? Where?"
"Boston."
Karen had always wanted her to move and join her in Boston but she had always said 'no', "...you need a nice guy too and you're not getting any over there." She had said back then.
There was nothing wrong with Boston, matter of fact she would love to move there, she had posted several resumes in the past three months. She got some offers she truly hated, others without reply and she was literally frustrated. Karen brought up the topic again some weeks ago to move to a bigger city - once again she declined and lied that she enjoyed her job here immensely, which of course Karen didn't buy. Karen had kept persisting but what Karen didn't understand was that she needed the right kind of job in other to move. Not so anymore, right now this moment Myra was desperate and prepared to relocate.
"Um...okay so..."
"It's a marketing executive job," Karen cuts in.
"But that's not my thing..."
"Come on Myra, you'd love this one. Will text you the details the moment I hang up."
"Okay, thanks Karen...love you."
"Love you too sweetheart. Don't forget to send your resume today though," she added.
"Sure."
Yes, her cousin was ever so persistent.
She went through the details of the text Karen had sent. It was a multinational company (private) based in Boston, she liked multinational companies but the truth was she rarely got offers from them. She hurriedly applied and sent all the documents required but she refused to add her photo.
They'll never get back to me, anyway, she thought as she left her scrappy tiny office for the day.Getting to her car it occurred to her she had a date, but all she wanted to do right now was curl up in bed and sleep. She was surely going to disappoint him, didn't want another evening with some random guy, with fakes smiles and lame jokes, she shook her head, "no", she was getting too old for that sort of thing.
At five six, slender, long honey blonde hair and dark brown eyes, she'd been able to capture some decent men's attention but decency wasn't particularly what she was looking for anymore. As she approached her 30th birthday, she longed for that aggressive attractiveness in a guy, that one guy that'd be able to share her life forever - her soul mate.
Ugh! What the heck! At the very last second she turned her car around and decided to go for the date, better than going home to be alone. And the result? Same ol' same ol', which was never in doubt; another evening that had left her mortified. She exhaled, more tired than ever, it was becoming harder and harder to find the right guy to fall in love with. Thanks for reading 😀
