Chapter 5

Myra loved her new office. Like the offices of all senior executives; it was bounded on one edge by the external wall of the building and on the other by full height glass that looked into the internal of the office.  The large window coverings provided a lot of natural light, which she welcomed having worked in an office with wood covering walls the past seven years...and the view? Oh boy! Boston skyline would take your breath away.  The ceilings were slightly higher with voluminous space that gave a sense of freedom.
Her charmer, the mystery guy that had captured her heart was still elusive.  She had tried The Seaport several times to get information about him to no avail. It made her sick that she still couldn't get him off her system.
"Hey Myra, here's the Warren Walsh file you requested for."
"Ah yeah, thanks Gisele," Myra took the file from her assistant.  Four days on the job and already a task to complete and she has like a week to accomplish it. Warren Walsh was a big client she was supposed to land, she was told he was a difficult one and already she liked the challenge. One of the reasons she changed jobs anyway.
It was pretty hard saying goodbye to her coworkers and friends over at Nantucket, especially Natty who had been very close to her. She'd miss them a great deal for sure.  Her ex-boss who had recently given her a promotion had offered her a raise so she could stay but she had already made up her mind that Nantucket wasn't for her anymore. Coming over to Boston was the best decision she had taken in a while; she'd be staying with Karen until she got a place of her own.
    Her phone rang.
    "Myra?"
It was Sean. He had done a nice job giving her the orientation and helping her go through HR quickly, it made her feel she’d been here for years.
    "Yes, Sean?"
"The VP is back and he wants to have a meeting with the two of us in his office right away."
"Sure. On my way over there now..."
Myra quickly grabbed two files she thought she'd need for this meeting and headed straight for the VP's office…she certainty didn't want to piss some old man.
Sean Foster as she had come to know was the Executive Assistant to the Vice President/CEO who had been away on vacation for almost two weeks now.  They were actually expecting him back next week.
The VP's office was bigger and on the left side. She met Sean halfway there; he immediately introduced her to the VP's Secretary, Claire Harnandez. Claire was in her late forties or early fifties. She kept a stern face and didn't smile back during the introduction; her only response was "you can go in."
The office was vacant.  They both entered and sat down and just then Sean's phone rang so he excused himself and went outside to take the call.
Sitting there all alone, she had time to look around. It was a very spacious office; on the desk which was neatly arranged were a laptop and some files, some other office stuff, a TV on the left side of the wall, shelf with lots of books on the right, big tall windows for any time he swings around to enjoy his view. The office didn't have much personal effect to it; there was a big painting of a woman, chubby, in her mid sixties holding a boy of probably three hanging on the wall. His wife, probably. For comfort and relaxation, just a little far from his desk was a stylish loveseat, two arm chairs and a coffee table all luxuriously styled, she bet it'd suit the owner too if he were a young guy.
"Davey is on his way." Sean announced when he came back in and resumed his sitting position. It was the first time he had called the VP by his name, the two times he had spoken about him, he had referred to him as 'VP'.
"Claire, cancel the rest of my afternoon, I'll leave immediately after meeting with Aaron McGraw."
Myra almost jumped out of her seat when she saw him through the glass doors. It couldn't be!  He walked round and took his seat in front of them and opened his laptop. It was him indeed!
"Davey meet our CCO, Myra Sanders...Myra this our VP/CEO VD Group and President VD Investment, Davey Vanderek," Sean stated at once.
"Yes, we have met before but there was no introduction then. Welcome on board VD Group," Davey stretched out his hand with a glint in his eyes.
Oh-my-God! Davey? He was the Vice President of this company? Unbelievable!
"You're one of those that interviewed me," was the first thing that came out of her mouth as she took his out stretched hand in a firm handshake. She felt electricity in her body when their hands touched and her eyes widened. It wasn't the right thing to say after being introduced to your boss but she was actually shocked beyond words to learn that he was her boss!
He smiled. "I didn't forget you either that's why I got Sean to hire you.”
He never forgot her. It was a good sign. "I didn't think I made any remarkable impression that day."
"Oh you did. I had a meeting with Sean afterwards and he didn't think Marketing Exec. was for you either."
"Yeah," Sean agreed. "We went through your records with your former company and we saw how successful you were with clients, it was exceptionally good."
"True. Another reason why we picked you," Davey added. "I...," he paused when Claire entered with a pitcher, some empty glasses; she placed each in front of them and left.
"So...," he continued, "I decided to create this position for you." As he was talking, he was also typing on his laptop.
So multitasking was also his thing? Great! How could he be so perfect?  She took a deep breath instead.
"I'm flattered,” she tittered, "I don't know what to say."
"We'd be pleased if you could transfer that energy here. VD Investment Bank is sort of my brainchild, reason why I had to be present at the interview to see first-hand who I really needed and what position I would want them in."
She nodded admiring the way he talked, his charisma, his manliness. What she wanted to do right now was steal him away to a quiet place with only the two of them and remain there forever.
"You see, I want to build a strong investment bank that this city would love and come to rely on. I value loyalty and I also give it back, hope we can work together to achieve success."
"I'd surely do my utmost best to realize the dream, Davey."
    He nodded, "good."
"Matter of fact," Sean said, "Myra will be working to see if she could win over Warren Walsh, that's her first assignment."
"Well that's a crazy start! Walsh is a tough customer."
    "I like ‘tough’," Myra smiled.
    "I love you already."
Myra blushed and quickly poured herself a glass of water for distractions. Her palms were sweaty and shaky when she lifted the glass she spilled some on his desk. Sean grabbed some napkin to dry it. "Thanks," she offered as she sipped the water.
   Sean nodded.
"I'm goal oriented and I focus on achieving perfect results, sure you can deliver?" Davey continued like there was no interference.
"Yeah. Sure I can.” Could he tell how nervous she was? She rubbed her moist palms against her skirt. “Can I come to you with any idea if and whenever I want your…um opinion?" She faltered a little.
"Sure, why not? Come to me, my office is always open," Davey answered.
That was the best thing he’d said since the meeting started.  It didn't take much for him to delve straight into business matters right away and she could see he was passionate about his job.
It was hard to concentrate with him there and so close; she smelt his strong masculine perfume. Today, he wore a dark gray three piece suit, white striped shirt with a red silk tie. His hair short, stylishly combed to one side and a day old beard graced his chin, which made him even more ridiculously handsome. Their eyes met several times, she didn’t know if she imagined it but she saw him wink a couple of times and all the time she wished he could come over and kiss her.
They were a little more than an hour into the meeting when Claire walked in to announce that Aaron McGraw was waiting outside so he got up.
That was when she saw it, the solid silver band! She had been so fixated on his face and body, on her wild thoughts about him, she had not peeked at his left hand...the laptop kind of shielded it too.
He was fricking married?! The blood drained from her face.
"You okay, Myra?" Sean asked as they stepped out of Davey's office.
"Yeah yeah, I'm fine." Davey must think she was rude because she didn't say a word as she left. She saw Aaron McGraw, she remembered him from the interview...so he was the Marketing Exec.? Good for him.
     "You look pale."
"I'm fine, I just need something to eat," she shrugged a laugh. "Did Davey just get married recently? Is that why he's been away?"
Sean chuckled. "No! He's been married for close to four years now… and they have a three year old son."
"Ooh nice." Myra forced a smile.
"Sean?" Claire called, "Davey wants you back in his office."
"I'll be right there." He turned to Myra, "I'll catch up with you later."
Myra nodded with a smile.  Sean was a pleasant guy and throughout the meeting she could see how much Davey trusted and valued his opinion, he wasn't just his Executive Assistant, as she had come to understand, he was also his friend, so she wasn't surprised he called him back in.
She headed back to her office. She had never felt anything like this for a guy before, not even for Zach she'd dated for two years. She had longed so much to see him again to make sure he wasn’t a dream because it had felt that way since after the interview and now she'd finally found him out of the blue, working in the same building, same floor...he wasn't single? Of course he wasn't single, she shook her head. Life was so unfair!
And why wasn't he wearing that damn ring on the day of the interview?
