Boring Life

I was perfectly happy with my boring life, so why did everything have to change that night?

All I wanted was to skip the drama that came with college, but then again, who can say no to a little fun and excitement? What can I say? I'm a sucker for adventures. I guess in the end, I have no one to blame but myself.

And like with all accidents, this one happens on a rainy night.

I fought with my seat belt but it just wouldn't budge. Neither would the door. "Mom!" It felt like a hammer the size of a meteorite was playing patty cake with my skull. My entire body was shaking with pain. The smell of smoke and blood was suffocating. She was saying something but I couldn't hear her clearly. I leaned closer, my ear almost touching her lips. "Go." She whispered weakly.

"No way, I'm not leaving you and Vi." I shook my head as I looked at Vi. She was unconscious and I would have thought she was dead, if not for the almost unnoticeable heaving of her chest. "I'll get us help, mom." Why did my phone choose to be dead at that moment?

I hit my fists against the window. "Help!" My throat hurt from screaming so much. Mom grabbed my hand. She was saying something again. Her lips were moving but no words came out.

I could hear the rain falling on the roof. I could hear the radio still playing. So why couldn't I hear her? Her eyes were fluttering close and her breathing was slower. "Mom? Stay with me. Try and keep your eyes open. Mom? Mom!! Help!! Somebody please help us!!!"

The hall is filled with chatter about plans for the school year and what happened over the previous semester, but everywhere becomes quiet when a girl suddenly runs into the room as if she's being chased by someone.

"St.... Car.... Out...." She stutters with her hands on her knees, breathing heavily. Everyone is staring at her, curious as to what she's trying to say.

"Steele is here!" She says after she's calmed down a bit. Immediately the words leave her mouth, there's a moment of total silence before people start running towards the front door.

There are three girls leaning against a car parked right in front of the manor.

One is a tall slim girl with ombre hair and hazel eyes. The other girl, almost half the first girl's height, has long brown braids and russet eyes. But the third girl is who no one can take their eyes off of.

She has red hair neatly tied in a bun and green eyes. She's wearing leather jeans, a Henley crop top, a red leather jacket and ankle boots.

Two Hours Ago

"Time to get up, Sleeping Beauty." I enter my room to see my best friend, Mya in my bed, stark nude and obviously hungover.

"I told you we shouldn't have let her go to that party." My other best friend, Avery says as she draws the curtain, letting light into the room that isn't very welcoming for said nude friend.

"Why do you guys have to be so loud?" Mya turns to the other side of the bed, reaching for a pillow to cover her eyes, and falling off the bed in the process.

"It's not our fault you can't keep it in your pants..... Or your stomach." Avery gags as she notices the pool of vomit on the floor next to the bathroom door. "You really couldn't make it to the sink?"

"Honestly, I don't know why you're fussing. This isn't your room or your bed." Mya retorts, making Avery scoff.

Meet my friends. Mya, sex goddess and Avery, who likes everything to be proper. Now you're probably wondering how they get along. Which is where I come in, I'm kind of a mix of both.

"A little help here?" Avery asks, as she starts picking up the clothes that are strewn around the room.

"Mya, we will talk about all this," I gesture around my room, "Later. For now, get dressed and meet us in the car. We're going to be late."

"So, who was it this time?" Avery asks, as she pulls out into the road.

"Trust me, once I remember, you'll be the first to know." Mya smirks while Avery stares at her in disbelief. "And he left early, so I don't really think it matters."

"What a terrific way to start Senior Year." Avery sighs.

Present

"Welcome to Cal-U. Hi, I'm Monse. I'll be showing you around the manor." A girl with a chignon bun walks up to us and leads us inside the school.

"I'm...."

"Oh, I know who you are. Everyone does." She interrupts Mya.

Avery, Mya and I exchange glances.

"And this brings our tour to an end," She points at a hallway with lockers. "Now let's see which lockers you have this year." She checks our schedules.

She shows us our lockers and after reading our schedules, points out how we have almost all the same classes.

Heels clicking on the floor, followed by a high-pitched voice yelling "Aria!" draws our attention from what she's saying.

Four girls are standing not far from us. One with a black bob and bangs, holding a notebook and pen, probably Aria runs with her head low to stand beside the girl in front who has dark hair with brown highlights.

The other two at the back who are definitely identical twins, are brunettes, although one has purple highlights. Their eyes match their hair color. They're wearing black and blue crop tops, yellow miniskirts and mid-thigh boots. Cheerleaders.

They walk past us like we're invisible, the dark haired girl talking and the girl with bangs writing it down.

Why the hell is her voice so familiar? Monse seems to notice where we've been looking at and she frowns.

"Melanie Forbes. Stay clear of her." Even the name is pulling at my memory. She turns her attention back to us but not before I saw the emotions that tore at her for a second.

Anger, pain and... fear? I shake it off from my mind. It's not my business.

We get through the day smoothly but my dreaded part finally comes. Lunch.
