"Is this seat taken?" I look up from my Spanish book to see stormy eyes, I mean Rafeal with some books and two milkshakes.
I came to the library to clear my head.
"Not at all." He sits and we read in silence for a while.
"Umm.. I'm Rafeal." He whispers.
"I know." I whisper back.
"Oh, okay." Another few minutes of silence. "And you are?" He asks.
"Lilac." My eyes does not leave my book.
"You offer Spanish?" He asks, glancing at my book.
"Yeah, I'm half latino." Why did I just tell him that?
"Me too. I'm not half Latino. I just offer Spanish." He explains. Silence. "How are you liking Cal-U?"
Not so well. The only people I've talked to are Avery, Mya, Monse, Melanie and now him. Everyone else stayed clear ever since the 'cafeteria' incident on the first day of school.
"It's a bit weird. Everyone keeps to themselves." I don't even know why I'm worrying about that, I mean I'm normally the 'mind my business' one.
Everyone tried to relate with me but I shut them out, except Violet and my guy bestie JR. So I should like it here. But for some reason, I don't.
"Well, its been a long school year. Last year was eventful and its left a mark on everyone. We all just want to pass through, I guess." He says, sipping. "Milkshake? I got one for Nex but I don't think he's showing up." He holds one out to me.
"Sure" I take a sip and it melts in my mouth.
"Peanut butter blast with whipped cream. One of my favorites." He smiles. Mine too. But I don't say that out loud.
We make small talk before the bell rings. We have the same class so we walk to gym together.
I enter the girls locker room to meet Mya and Avery already changed but they wait for me while I enter one of the stalls.
"What you been up to?" Avery asks.
"The library." I say casually.
"With Rafeal? Holding milkshakes?" I can almost see the smug look on her face.
"We only studied for a while. And that milkshake was meant for Nex." I say in defense, pulling my shirt over my head.
"Of course." She chuckles.
"Stay away from him." Monse's voice is clear. She must have just come in or came out of one of the stalls.
"I didn't know you had dibs." I say, faking surprise.
"I'm serious. Melanie won't like the fact that you guys are hanging out." She whispers the last part.
"We're not hanging out. Besides, I thought Melanie is with Nex." I tie my hair into a bun.
"Just. Stay. Away." I hear a door slam. I come out to see Avery and Mya.
"What's her problem?" I ask, confused. Avery shrugs and we enter the gym.
"Today, everyone will take the agility course" Our gym teacher, Miss Agreste announces.
"It is to improve on your speed, strength and stamina. This course will last throughout the week. And the people that fail this course will get a low mark on their first assessment test.
There will be a final test in two weeks. Now you'll have two partners and tests will be marked both individually and with your group. We will only practice today. Make the most of it."
