After choosing our food from the lunch ladies, which I was kinda anticipating because most kids commented on the school platform that cafeteria food and lunch ladies were the worse. The lunch ladies seem nice to me. I walked behind Avery and Mya, my head low and my shoulders slouched.
They are so engrossed in talking, Mya doesn't see him before she bumps into him head on.
She falls backwards and immediately the whole cafeteria becomes silent. There are three guys standing there with Melanie and her goons.
The guy in the middle, who Melanie has her hands wrapped around, has Mya's lunch all over his shirt. He has golden side curls and electric blue eyes.
He is really tall. I am the same height as Melanie and her head is one or two inches from his shoulder.
I actually didn't know all that until later. It was the guy behind tall guy who really attracts my attention. He isn't as tall as the first guy but he has better build.
He also has sandy brown tousled hair and stormy grey eyes. For a moment, I think our eyes met. A voice pulls me back to reality.
"How dare you, you dwarf!" Melanie bellows. I could have sworn I have heard that voice somewhere before.
"Do you think you can afford this shirt, smallfoot?" She asks again. {Mya is much shorter than most of us.}
She could have gotten away with saying that to either me or Avery. But it just had to be Mya. This should be fun.
"Bet your dad could use this shirt to feed you for a whole year. " She snickers.
I look at everyone sitting, their eyes fixed on the jibing. No one shows signs of stepping in. Why isn't anyone doing anything?
'You should probably do the same. This isn't your business.' My mind warns.
I know Mya can take care of herself and probably make Melanie chew her tongue. But then, I remember how I used to feel when I was bullied.
'You'll regret this. Walk away.' My mind tells me. But what I do next is definitely a dumb move.
I can see Mya about to talk back at her, so I push her aside and stand in front of her.
"Don't talk to her like that." I snap at her. A few gasps and murmurs comes from the tables. I look at tall guy. "Who do you think you are?"
She dodges it and glares at me "And what is talking?" She hisses.
"I was about to ask you the same question. But I'm afraid you'll have to speak louder, I can't hear you over all the barking."
Everyone is silent again, waiting for Melanie's comeback. She turns to Monse who is standing behind us and glares at her.
"A dog shouldn't be let loose its first day out of the pound" She warns curtly.
"Or they'll take you back? Oh wait, no one wants a yapping bitch. Isnt that why they sent you there in the first place? And isnt that why you couldnt stay?" I say.
"Keep your dog on a lease. Make sure there isn't a next time." She whispers to Monse. She then turns to me.
"New meat. I'll give you today. Monse obviously hasn't shown you the ropes. But I won't be so calm next time."
They leave. Monse pulls me to an empty table. She is boiling.
"What was that?" She spits.
"You're welcome?" I reply slowly.
"Do you have a death wish?" Monse asked through gritted teeth.
"I didn't see you doing anything" Mya folds her hands.
