٭Prologue.٭

ALL IT TOOK WAS THE FLASH OF the barrel of the steel gun for my entire to be uprooted and never the same again. When father's crazed dark eyes looked at mother's and he aimed the gun at her head. I couldn't recall much of that night except father being thrown back.

With messily packed bags mother gathered the things she deemed important; seven pairs of outfits, two shoes, her laptop, as well as a wooden box, and a big stash of money before she was dragging me out into the night and booking a train for us to disappear.

That was the last time I ever saw father was the night when he pulled a gun out of nowhere when he was arguing with mother, a common occurrence. And then he was thrown into the wall and knocked out cold before mother was dragging me out of the room.

We spent nights bouncing around in hotel rooms before mother finally settled for a place on the map as I slept exhausted in the rundown motel with Chinese food discarded across from me. "It's okay baby, we're going home now." Were the last words I heard whispered to me.
