Soulmate. Noun. Definition: A person ideally suited to another as a close friend or romantic partner; a person with whom one has a strong affinity, shared values and tastes, and often a romantic bond.

That's what everyone in this world believes in.

If you ask [Name], she thinks soulmates are unreasonable, real, but unreasonable.

Ever since she was born, people were interested in her eyes. Unlike most people in the world, [Name] has stars in her eyes. Entire constellations shine behind her hues, and according to the legend, her eyes will dictate who her soulmate will be.

[Name's] mother calls her a miracle baby since she was born to two star-lacking nobodies. Her family lineage hasn't seen stars since her great grandmother five times over.

Some people think [Name] would be honored to be given such an astounding set of eyes, but she isn't. She hates every bit of it.

Up until graduation, [Name] was the only kid to have stars in her eyes. Every day she'd be harassed with questions about it, and although it may seem like a blessing to others, [Name] believes it's a curse.

Random jealous women look at her in disgust, thinking they're more deserving of her eyes than she. Men, who believe they're so cool, harass her and ask if they're her soulmate. Random servicemen and women base her off of stereotypes because of her eyes, thinking she's shallow, high-maintenance, and without manners.

So every day, [Name] tries her best to hide her eyes. She buys black contacts, and the darkest colored sunglasses to distort the glittering speckles. But the results stay the same. The stars, those damned stars are still seen. But she won't stop wearing them.

As much as she tries to escape them, those billion stars will follow her.

...

Another con about [Name's] eyeballs is that she can't love who she wants, and her crushes must stay a secret. Society thinks she should be with her soulmate, not with any other person.

So throughout school, the cute guys she met, and all the little puppy love moments she's had, were all for naught. She's never dated; for fear that others would put her down for "cheating" on her soulmate, a person she's never met before. They already have a weird fascination and hatred for her eyes, so why would she want to put extra pressure on herself?

But [Name] can't help it. She fell in love again, and with someone close to her too.

For context, [Name] works at the Hyuga eye clinic. The Hyuga family is famous for their eye clinics and have established multiple across the globe. They prescribe glasses and contacts to those who, ya know, have bad eyesight. They give treatments for glaucoma and sometimes provide surgery to those who need it. They've also profited off of the lonely, soulmate driven people who want to have starry eyes by selling them contacts with starry effects; however, if someone looks hard enough, they can tell they're completely fake.

So yes, [Name] works there—specifically the one in Konoha—and she's in love with her coworker and best friend, Neji Hyuga. He's everything she wants in a soulmate, yet, he isn't her soulmate.

According to the legend, when a person meets their soulmate, they see them as a moving supernova. Their soulmate has their own colors, and their body should be outlined with a constellation. And depending on the multitude of stars—the dynamic of it all, along with the relationship with one's soulmate—the experience could either be lackluster or intense. Of course, this experience of meeting one's soulmate is different for everybody.

To [Name's] dismay, she hasn't seen anything of Neji, but she believes he's perfect. Perfect in every way.

When they first met, Neji was cold, like most people when they meet someone with stars. But as time moved on, he warmed up to her, smiling at her and just hanging out with her. Then, she fell in love. Hard too.

No one knows about it. Not a single soul. No one would even guess that [Name] loves Neji by how calm she acts around him. And Neji is none the wiser.

At times, [Name] wants to confess but feels the repercussions would ruin anything they built together.

For three years, she's had this crush. She developed it for three years; nurturing it, caring for it, and shielding it from the world.

Why is it like this? She often wonders. Why must I be the only one with a soulmate? Why must I carry this burden and love someone that I've never met? It's ridiculous. I've been cursed.

Though most think she's been blessed.

Those distant suns are the most bewitching thing in the world and resemble the sky above. How unfair that only a select few get these eyes.

A blessing to be.

A curse to be.
