Twinkle, Little Star

When [Name] was just a little girl, her whole family celebrated the birth of another star-bound child. Every year on her great great great great great grandmother's birthday, they relive old memories, tell ancient stories, and thank Granny Celeste for passing down her genes to [Name].

Tomorrow will be that day. Tomorrow, she'll have to return to the party scene and fake her way through the happiness and thank her grandmother for the eyes. She'll have to pretend she doesn't utterly despise Granny Celeste.

It's a blessed day to her star-less family, but to [Name], it's another reminder that she is chained to a person she's never met.

No matter how far apart she is to her soulmate, no matter if she grows old without ever meeting them, the chain connects their ankles. Tightly bound.

But within the safe walls of her room, she doesn't have to worry about her status in the world. Her eyes aren't glorified, and she doesn't have to wear those cursed contacts nor sunglasses.

[Name] can sit and do nothing all day. No one will expect anything of her. She can be herself.

And being [Name] means: blasting her music in her small home, wearing a blanket like a cape, eating junk food and baking cookies, talking to herself as she scrolls through social media, dancing at random times, and tearing up at sad dog movies.

Yep, that's [Name].

If she acts like this in public, people would probably think less of her and honestly believe that she's not worthy of the eyes fate bestowed upon her.

But it doesn't matter either way. She doesn't believe she's worthy of her eyes either.

...

It's almost like a family reunion. All her family, immediate or extended, are here, placed in Granny Celeste's old home. It resides in the outskirts of town with acres of land surrounding it.

The original small home was built upon again and again as Granny Celeste birthed more kids than available bedrooms. From the stories told by her great-great uncles and her great-great aunts, Granny Celeste's husband was a skilled architect and very skilled with his hands.

All the old furniture still resides in the house, but no one dared to sit or touch it. This house resembles a museum rather than a home.

Upon [Name's] arrival, she parks on the dying yellow grass and stares blankly at the house. She doesn't want to be here.

Sometimes, [Name] wonders what her family would do if she didn't show up to this party. At its core, the party is a shameless and tasteless celebration of the star-eyed people of her family; Granny Celeste and her. She's the star of the show, but what would happen if she didn't show up? Would the stories still be told? Will the food still be eaten workout her yearly toast? Would they still drink and be merry?

[Name] turns the rubbing car off and spectates her family. Their faces are blank, and although she's two hours late—on purpose, not by accident—, the festivities haven't started.

She knows that she'll have to fake a smile, a laugh, and must take her contacts out. She'll have to endure the same compliment a hundred times and act like she doesn't hate every second of it.

With a breath, [Name] exits the car, a bright smile shining from her features.

It's just another day.

...

"Oh! [Name]! It's good to see you!" One of [Name's] many great aunts greets her at the door. "Your eyes are just as beautiful as the day you were born!"
