Dinner at the Uchiha's is always a show. Every Sunday, Mrs. Uchiha invites Itachi and Izumi over for lunch, but the couple only comes over for dinner. Izumi usually protests to Itachi, saying she doesn't want to go. She knows the questions his mother will ask her, they're the same one from last week, and the week before, and the years before that.

"When will I get grandkids?"

"How are you making money again, Izumi?"

"Will you go back to school? You know it's not too late, honey."

"You two will make the cutest kids! When will you have some? Have you thought about it?"

"Have you two thought about marriage?"

It's the same questions Izumi endured for years. Izumi would love nothing more than to give Itachi kids and slap a ring on this som if a gun, but only on their own time. She doesn't want to be forced into pumping out babies and doing domestic work constantly while Itachi works day and night. She doesn't want his parents' type of marriage, no offense, but it's too old fashioned for her. She still wants to live her life and doesn't want people telling her what to do.

But here she is again. Sitting at the table, surrounded by people she loves but doesn't know if they love her back.

"Thank you so much for the meal Mrs. Uchiha," Izumi says with a big smile.

"It's no problem, honey," Mikoto says. "You're always welcome here."

Though she says that Izumi has always felt uncomfortable sitting with the Uchiha family. She loves them dearly, she really does, but something about them rubs her the wrong way. Mikoto and Sasuke are passive-aggressive, and Fugaku makes up for their passiveness by being overly aggressive. Itachi is the only straightforward, assertive member. That's why she loves him so much, cause he knows what he wants and how to ask for it. The others, not so much. Although Izumi is assertive outside of the Uchiha home, she becomes passive in front of them. Allows every bite and snide remark pass, but looks to Itachi for help when something truly does hurt her feelings. He, as her boyfriend, silences any mean comments. Here in this household, she stands on the thinnest ice imaginable.

The dinner continues with idle chatter and scraping of forks. Once the food is cleared from all plates, Mikoto comes around the table and picks up the platters.

Izumi, naturally, doesn't offer to help, which makes Mikoto ask, in her motherly tone, "Can someone help me with this?"

Her black eyes direct to Izumi, who casts her own away. Deep, deep in her soul, Izumi doesn't want to be stuck with Mikoto. It'll be nothing but girl-talk, nothing but how exhausting and yet fulfilling her life as Mrs. Mikoto Uchiha is. It's boring. Empty words that don't do anything but make every cell in Izumi's body want to off themselves.

"I'll help mom," Itachi offers, standing from his seat. "As a thank you for having us over for dinner."

Mikoto beams at her lovely son. "Oh, thank you, dearie."

Itachi kisses the top of Izumi's head before walking off to the kitchen with his mom. Fugaku grunts and leaves the room, going to find a newspaper to read since he missed the late-night news.

Now it's just Izumi and Sasuke. She's been wanting alone time with Sasuke ever since she met him, ever since she saw how close Itachi is to him and how sweet their relationship is. And yet, he sits, typing away at his phone, dissociating with the world around him. Izumi doesn't know what to say to him. Everything she thinks of gets swatted away by her cynical thinking. She knows Sasuke doesn't hate her, but he also doesn't absolutely love her.

It comforts her to know he doesn't want her dead, and that says a lot about their relationship.

"Hey, Sasuke," she calls. "Do you want to star in my next video?"

"I'll pass." He says it so quickly, the rejection shoots down her spirits, but it doesn't stop her. She continues her offer, an offer to solidify their relationship.

"I was thinking, you'll do Itachi's make-up, and then he does mine. A fun video, how about it?"

Sasuke takes one good look at her, giving her a cold, unrelenting stare. "I said, I'll pass."

He sneers before returning to his phone. Izumi's mood plummets into the negatives. Her bottom lip trembles as she wonders what she could've possibly done to offend Sasuke to make him dislike her so much.

Before she can wallow any more in her self-pity, Itachi returns, wiping his wet hands on his jeans. He sees his girlfriend's sad, doe eyes, and Sasuke's eyebrows pinched together to show his annoyance. It's evident as to what happened.

Itachi smiles as an apology for his brother's behavior. Izumi doesn't smile back. Instead, she stands and disappears somewhere in the house, possibly Itachi's old room, just to be alone. Itachi looks to Sasuke.

He must protect his girlfriend's honor. So as her boyfriend, he sits next to Sasuke, puts a hand on his shoulder, and sighs.

"Sasuke, please, please, be nicer to Izumi," Itachi says. He's had this talk before when Sasuke was younger, and back then, it went well. It went well because Sasuke was more naive, and easily bribed with fun outings and junk food. But now, Sasuke isn't like that anymore. He's not easily convinced and doesn't hold back his emotions, especially when he doesn't like something.

"What do you mean?" Sasuke grumbles. His former sneer softens when he looks to his older brother.

"She's trying her best to bond with you and---"

"No one told her to do that," Sasuke snaps.

"But the fact that she wants to should mean something to you!" Itachi grips Sasuke's shoulder with more force to make him a bit uncomfortable.

"But, it doesn't." Sasuke isn't one to shy from the truth. It's not in his nature to lie or cover up feelings nor to spare them. He doesn't care about how people see him, nor does he care if those same people label him abrasive, rude, or moody. This type of attitude has always concerned Itachi.

"Why doesn't it?" Itachi crumbles at the lack of feeling in Sasuke's tone. "She loves you."

This silences Sasuke but doesn't stop him from furrowing his brows further.

"Isn't she human? Doesn't she feel? Why is it that you spare my feelings but not hers?" He speaks in that diplomatic way that won him many positive affirmations on his speeches. "Are we not all made of the same stuff? Stars dust? Of organs and blood and flesh? We all have the same emotion; we all feel the same pain. Why is it you lack empathy when it comes to Izumi?"

"Itachi I---"

"No! I don't want to hear your excuses anymore. If you don't respect her, you don't respect me. Someday I might marry her; she'll be my wife, your sister-in-law. She'll be family, officially!" Itachi huffs and stands from his seat. "You should apologize to her."

Sasuke nods, silenced by Itachi's speech. If Itachi knows how to do one thing, it's how to make Sasuke feel awful about himself.
