He shut his briefcase and spun the dial to lock it.
He carried it into the house with him, set it on the kitchen counter.
Michelle was at the sink, washing potatoes. She turned around when she heard him, still holding the paring knife.
"Going to stab me?" he joked.
She flushed and set it down on the counter.
"That's alright. Just make sure to get the drop on me next time."
"I didn't— I wasn't—"
"Relax. I'm just messing with you."

He didn't miss the looks she sometimes gave him when she thought he wasn't paying attention. He knew that she sometimes resented him, resented the tight hold he kept on her.

"What's for dinner?"
"Just steak and potatoes. Is that okay?"
He shrugged.
"There's beer in the fridge. I just bought it today."
"Thanks." He opened the fridge and took out two bottles, one for each of them. "I'm going to go lie down for a bit. Long day at work."
He walked down the hall to their shared bedroom and shut the door behind him.
On a second thought, he locked it.
No sooner had he sat down than his phone rang.
Well, one of his phones.
He pulled them both out of his pocket, set the silent one on the nightstand.
The other he answered.
"What can I do for you today, sir?" he asked.
The man on the other end chuckled. "I'd like to make an order."
