Her reaction was almost funny.
The gasp, the shock. The way her eyebrows went up her forehead and stayed there.
"So?" he asked.
"I... I... Ben..."
"I love you, Michelle."
Her face crumpled. "We can't afford this," she whispered. "To be here, to get married... We can't afford this."
"We can. I promise you, we can afford this. Please just trust me."
Her eyes glistened with tears, but nothing stirred in his chest. "Ben..."
"Please. I just want us to be together forever."
She silently held out her hand to him, and he slid the ring onto her finger.
She continued to stare at it as he stood up and returned to his seat.
"This is really... It's a lot, Ben. I don't..."
"Don't worry about it. Things are about to change for us."

He watched her sleep, curled into a ball on her side of the bed.
She had taken the ring off, leaving it in the bathroom with a chain she insisted she'd have to use if she was going to wear the ring to work. She claimed she didn't want to lose it.
He sighed and climbed into bed beside her.
There was no reason for her to be so worked up about the money. He hadn't been lying when he said they could afford it. Wasn't his car proof of that?
Nevertheless, he'd show her, make her see.
A new house, a nice vacation, a wedding.
He didn't want any of it, but he knew she did.
As for him, well, he just wanted her.
