"She was the lawyer on that big mobster case, right?" Barnes asked.
So that's where Mick recognized her from.
"Yeah. The trials were supposed to start today. I heard on the news this morning that she called the judge last night to dismiss the charges."
"Weird."
"Tell me about it." She stood up. "Let's get this phone to forensics. There's prints on the screen. Might be hers, might be the killer's."
Barnes raised an eyebrow. "Nothing about this being Rhodes' work?"
"Well, because you mentioned it, yeah, I think was him."
Barnes rolled his eyes.
"Think about it. Another GSW to the head, contact point range. Her phone call to the judge, her murder, it looks like Rhodes."
"And who paid him this time?"
She smacked him with her notepad. "Any one of a dozen people. My best guess, someone in the mob."
"Ah, right, of course. Pay some guy to take out the lawyer trying your guys. Why not do it yourself?"
She shrugged. "It wouldn't be smart to be getting their hands any dirtier when they're about to be put on trial."
"Sure, Mick, sure."
She could've smacked him again, but Doctor Kline arrived with his gurney and the building's owner caught her eye and waved her over.
"You know I'm right," she said to Barnes before walking away.
