"There's a man out front that wants to talk to you Jess," Brooklyn said as she stood in one of the doorways in the back of the shop. She was out of breath, but I can see why. We've been so busy lately and she's been running all over the place. She was holding a laundry basket full of shorts, filled to the rim. I however, was sitting at a desk paying bills for our store.
"Are you sure it's for me?"
She still was breathing heavy when she nodded. "Yeah."
I got up and stretched, looking at the mess I created. Bills and all sorts of papers were everywhere. I sighed loudly, realizing how much work I have to do.
I ran my hand through my long hair and started to walk out front, my eyes showing how tired I was. When I walked through the curtain, I didn't see anything. Any man, that is.
I shrugged and was about to walk back when I got pulled behind the curtain, someone's hands gripping my throat to the point where I couldn't breathe.
Alert mode instantly kicked in when I realized: this was the day I was going to die.
"Jess!" Jamie screeched, but I could barely hear her. The room was turning white and every noise was distant. This man was choking me, and was trying to kill me.
I felt Jamie push him off of me somehow but then she immediately stepped back, not wanting him to do the same to her. I was coughing uncontrollably as I fell to the ground, trying to regain breath. I looked up at Jamie and her terrified eyes, then looked to my left at this "man" who wanted to see me.
He was gone.
Brooklyn came running out, looking at us two. We were the only three working today.
"What the hell?" Brooklyn yelled, her head turning back and forth between Jamie and I. "Who was that?"
"I didn't recognize him," Jamie muttered quickly, probably scared out of her mind. She stared off into space with her arms crossed over her chest tightly.
"I didn't either," I said, but my voice cracked into a whisper on accident because of the strain in my throat.
Brooklyn helped me up and quietly asked if I was okay, but Jamie couldn't shake the feeling. She couldn't look me in the eye.
"Are you okay?" I asked, wondering what her problem was.
She finally looked at me. "I'm fine," she scoffed. "Jesus Jess, you're the one who just got choked. Are you okay?"
"Yeah." Is all I could say.
I was a little pissed. I do appreciate the fact that Jamie pushed him off, but she's hiding something from me. Everyone is.
"Let's just-" Brooklyn raked her brain for the right words to speak. "get back to work. Pretend like nothing happened."
I nodded, looking at Jamie one last time before I walked back to the office.
I thought about calling Justin. I felt extremely guilty leaving him at home, but he insisted. I know he can take of himself, it's just hard for me to know he's not able to do half the things he could be doing if I was there to help him. Hell, I didn't even know how he would be able to pee by himself.
I turned my chair around to look into a drawer on the back wall of billing information that I needed to know. Once I found it, I pulled it out, turning my chair back around slowly. I looked up to see Jamie standing directly in front of me, scaring the shit out of me.
"Oh my gosh," I put my hand over my chest. "Jamie, you scared me."
She just stared at me; creeping me out a little bit.
"Jamie-"
"You know what this means right?" She looked dead into my eyes, hers filled with fear.
"What does what mean?"
"This." She whispered. "You'd think that now that Jake's gone it would be better."
I gave her a knowing look, knowing where she was coming from.
"It's all starting over again."
______________________________"Jessss," I heard when I walked in the door.
I smiled widely and walked over to where Justin was in the living room, plopping down next to him on the couch. I snuggled into his chest and sighed contently when I felt his lips on my cheek.
"How was work?"
I had almost forgot what happened, but the second he mentioned it I felt like I experienced it all over again. "Fine."
I didn't look up at him, and I knew that would make him upset. I didn't want to upset him, I just knew that if he looked into my eyes he'd know something was wrong.
"Look at me," he said quietly; I saw it coming. I looked up at him and kissed him quickly, making him smirk. "What's wrong?"
I sighed. "This guy choked me today."
Justin's entire body stiffened. "What?"
I exhaled heavily, closing my eyes. "Yeah."
I looked at him, and it was obvious he wanted to say something. "What?" I said, a little irritated.
He looked surprised at my tone of voice. "What are you talking about?"
"Why are you hiding things from me?"
He rolled his eyes, which he knew pissed me off to the maximum. "I'm not hiding anything from you Jess. Stop."
I nodded sarcastically and got up, making him groan.
"Are you really that mad?"
"Do you want something while I'm up?" I changed the subject, but I knew it was no use.
"No, I'll get up myself."
I creased my eyebrows. "No, let me get it for you. You're hurt Justin."
Nonetheless, he got up anyway, making it over to the kitchen to where I was standing.
I had my arms crossed over my chest, looking at him slowly come closer. "What did you need?"
He finally got close enough to the point where he smashed his lips against mine, gripping my ass with all his might. My eyes shot open, trying to decipher if that had really just happened. He released his lips from mine and dug his head into my neck, biting the skin roughly. I cleared my throat, trying not to let him get to me; but he knew he was. His kisses trailed all the way across my chest and up the other side of my neck, making their way back to my lips where he pecked them gently.
"You."
