Heaven if you sent us down
So we could build a playground
For the sinners to play as saints
You'd be so proud of what we've made
I hope you got some beds around
'Cause you're the only refuge nowCrossfire - Stephen
Lucy hadn't seen Derek in days, and had avoided the other werewolf, Scott McCall, as much as possible.
She sat with Isaac at lunch, and occasionally his friend Erica would sit with them. Erica was a blonde girl with epilepsy. She would have been really pretty if she tamed her hair and wore something other than sweatpants and a long-sleeved shirt. She already was rather pretty, just not in the way that got attention.
Lucy almost genuinely liked the pair. She knew that she would have grown attached if she actually had any emotions, so she considered herself lucky that she currently didn't.
Nothing really happened until late Tuesday night. It was already after dark, and Lucy heard a sudden cat-like noise. She quickly clapped her hands over her ears in an attempt to block out the noise. It sounded like a cat being choked to death. It was followed by the roar of a werewolf.
Lucy thought about just leaving it alone, but she knew Derek would be there, since he was helping Scott learn control. She rolled her eyes and sped towards the noise.
"What are you doing?" She asked, annoyed. "Trying to call every supernatural creature in the country?" She glared at Scott and his human friend. "Cause there are some really annoying vampires out there. Like Stefan. And Elijah."
"Who?"
"That's not the point. What are you even doing?"
"Calling the Alpha." Derek sighed.
"Why?"
"Derek kidnapped my boss because he thinks he's the alpha!" Scott said angrily, stepping towards the black car. He looked in the window and whirled around. "Where is he? What did you do with him?"
"What are you talking about? I didn't do anything to him!" Derek quickly defended, and froze, looking at the empty backseat.
"He's supposed to be in there, isn't he." Lucille commented. The two werewolves nodded.
They froze suddenly when something stabbed Derek in the back. Blood bubbled out of his mouth and he coughed, blood spraying on to his clothes, the asphalt and Lucy, who had been standing next to him. She didn't even flinch, but the human and younger werewolf looked both horrified and disgusted. They turned and ran towards the school.
The animal threw Derek's body across the parking lot, and it hit the wall of the school before falling to the grass that was covered in dried leaves. Lucy looked at the beast. It definitely wasn't a normal animal. It looked like a cross between a mangy wolf and a human. It's fur was matted and ugly. His teeth were uncomfortably long and his lips were pulled back into a snarl. His eyes glowed a bright red. There was an excess of fur on his back and little on his head, arms and legs. His paws still looked somewhat like hands and feet, but there were long claws that reflected the light from the dim street lights.
Lucy didn't waste a second to let her vampire features out, snarling with her fangs out, her eyes suddenly an eerie amber color, and veins visible around her eyes.
Scott gaped at her, but pulled her away from the animal, and into the school, frantically telling his friend to lock the door. The pair looked out the window, trying to find the alpha.
The human suddenly rushed out and grabbed a pair of hedge trimmers that were laying at the bottom of the stairs. Scott evidently spotted the alpha werewolf since he called for his friend frantically, eyes still on the alpha.
