He was a demon.

Or, at least, the man towering over her looked like one.

The Captain's skin was a deep, oxblood colour that contrasted handsomely with his giant gold horns. They curled back over the crown of his head, rising high above his loose black hair, with the sharp, gold tipped points arching up at the end. Nova likened them to dragon horns.

Not that dragons were real, but there was no other animal or species that came to mind that could better describe them.

His strong jaw and piercing gold eyes were striking. Like Nyx's, the pupils were a harsh black vertical line, expanding and contracting as he stared at them. A soft, full mouth was turned down into a frown, while his full black eyebrows creased.

Clearly, he was unimpressed with their presence.

"Nyx, I see you are doing as you want... Like always." The devil's voice was a sensual rumble, his ire just adding to the addictive quality of the sound. His tail flicked up, broadcasting his agitation, while his black clawed fist clenched.

Completely uncaring of the man's barely veiled frustration, Nyx ushered the three of them closer to the command deck. Nova really didn't want to get too close but she felt like she had little choice. Gripping Mark's hand in a death grip, she plucked up the courage to shuffle a bit further forward.

"Captain Faolán, I need you to prevent any ships trying to leave the space station. Dr. Haber has stolen some nanotechnology and is now attempting to escape." Nyx was calm and confident, while she stared the man down.

The Captain didn't waste any time, immediately taking his post at the command deck and shouting orders.

"Lockdown the docking bays! Not a single ship is allowed in or out! Send teams to retrieve any ships that have recently departed and hail them to return immediately. I want a thorough log of all ships currently docked and that have left in the last-" His gaze briefly connected with Nyx's.

"Five hours should do." She supplied.

"Eight hours!"

"Yes Captain!" The crew replied in chorus.

Nyx scowled, then leant closer to Nova. "I'd say he was a control freak, but I know better. He just likes being a bit of a prick, sometimes." She whispered.

The scowl coming from the Captain could melt skin off the bone, and even though he was directing it at Nyx, Nova still had a strong urge to avoid eye contact and not draw attention to herself.

"You said that you would explain things later." Harou said aloud, staring pointedly to both Nyx and the Captain. "I want an explanation now."

"What would you like to know?" Nyx replied.

"Are we safe here? Now that we know about you - about the Volos?" Harou asked.

Nova let out a tense breath that she hadn't realised she had been holding. It was a good question, and she trusted Mark and Harou to pick up any lies. What she wasn't confident about was whether they could escape if needed.

Her nervousness eased somewhat, when Nyx raised her blue eyebrows in genuine surprise, while even Captain Faolán looked a bit confused with the implication.

"Of course, you are safe from us. It took a lot of time and effort to support the three of you to escape from Earth Tech. In the name of Queen Gaia, you have been granted asylum and are therefore under protection of the Volos." Nyx answered.

Nova found this news startling. She had always thought it had been a stroke of luck, finding a project the three of them could go to after they had fled.
