Nova looked down at the dead, cold corpse of Dr.Haber.
It wasn't the justice that she had wanted for herself. It wasn't the justice that all of his victims deserved; there was no public acknowledgement and retribution of what he had done, of the horrors that he had committed.
But as Nova looked at the two children huddled behind Harou, both emaciated and one with significant cuts and wounds down his body...
He deserved it, Nova thought to herself.
Nova had not been allowed in for the initial entry - a scientist isn't much use in a fight - but she had now been allowed into the ship to help investigate the lab.
She had been warned about the body before entering. A security officer had carefully explained that when they had stormed the ship, the situation they had found had required immediate intervention.
Harou had been far more blunt.
When she had arrived in the room, he growled through clenched teeth that Dr. Haber had been dosed up on Blue. In his drugged up haze, he had begun torturing the boy. This was when Harou had 'lost it'. He hadn't needed to explain further; the doctor's throat had been torn out, and the body in general didn't look ... together, any more.
She took one last look of the man that had haunted her dreams for years. Nova had remembered him differently; tall, powerful, with slick brown hair and a condescending gaze. Eyes as dark as death, staring through to your soul. Analysing you... picking you apart.
But here, his skin had a pale parlour, with blue tracking lines highlighting his veins. His glassy, dead eyes sprinkled with flecks of his own red blood, and age lines etched deep into his face. Gone was the image of a younger, influential figure. Instead lay a greying, middle aged human that suddenly seemed so much smaller in her eyes.
She thought she would feel more conflicted, but she only felt relief.
Nova draped a cloth over the body, happy that her last memory of him would be that he had died from the claws and teeth of her friend. Of the friend that had protected her and Rosalind during their time at Earth Tech. From an alien that had shown them more humanity then Earth Tech ever had.
It had not been the justice that she had wanted, but it was poetic and satisfying in its own way.
As she turned back again to Harou, she could see the dried blood on his claws and mouth. Splashes of it had even made it onto his fur, matting it as it dried. However, Nova could also see the non-identical twin boy and girl, curled up protectively behind Harou's legs.
They were half Lupus and half human; an adorable blend of the two species that resulted in mainly human bodies, but wolf-like ears, tails and claws. Where human hair would normally be, instead was dirty brown fur. Covered in grime and soiled clothes, even Nova's human nose could smell them from across the room.
She couldn't imagine what they were thinking, after what they had experienced. Nova thought that seeing Harou kill a man would have terrified the two children, but instead they had clutched onto him and had so far not let him go.
Perhaps their Lupus instincts were driving them to seek protection from an Alpha? Nova wasn't sure, but they had obviously taken a liking to him.
The children suddenly tucked themselves tighter behind Harou, their hazel eyes staring unblinkingly at her.
When she heard footsteps behind her, she realised that the Captain and Mark had just followed her in.
"Where is Nyx?" Captain Faolán asked, his voice surprisingly gentle. It was probably to seem as unthreatening as possible to the children, but it did little good. Their eyes were painfully wide as they took in his demonic presence. The little girl shivered and hid her face in Harou's tail.
