Barely managed to rest his mind and body as he intended to because so soon, he should be on feet again. Johnny had a lot to think about last night, mainly because the agreement with his mother still haunted him. His lazy steps showed the stress he felt as he headed for the bathroom. The mood of his morning routine that day was worse than he imagined.
"Back to the old days... At least my face didn't swell" he shrugged.
That feeling of defeat and imprisonment was nothing new for the older son of the Seo family. He just didn't admit the fact that he'd gotten used to it, even though it still bothered him. He decided to drink black coffee to wake up from the sleepiness that he could barely handle by the hours of insomnia he had of pure distress.
"How did I get involved in this again?" held the cup with the right hand taking a good sip. "Oh yeah. They forced me" another sigh.
He checked the time on the microwave's digital clock. Six thirty in the morning and Johnny was already complaining even if the real issue hasn't arrived yet. It didn't take much, however, for his unlucky days to really start.
"Speak of the devil and in he walks..." commented as soon as the intercom rang.
Still in his pajamas, his hair tousled but not disheveled, Johnny checked the small screen that allowed him to face his visitor before unlocking the door. A man in a suit, quite serious, and with some suitcases waiting on the other side. It didn't take much for the taller young man to let him in, being polite even though he hated it all.
"Ms. Seo sent me to deliver the rest of the luggage" he quickly left all suitcases on the floor in the living room. " And this is for you" he gave a huge list to Johnny. "There is also a letter."
"What's that for...?"
"Mrs. Seo wanted it this way. SNS are very risky at the moment" he held out the envelope. "Remember, we'll always be watching. Don't make mistakes or slip up, there are always consequences."
"Yummy, breakfast with a hint of threat. Do you want to stay for some cookies and tell me what else I should do?" Johnny's tone overflowed irony. "I can make tea if you prefer."
"My deliver is complete." the man in suit turned to left the apartment.
"Don't let the door hit you on the butt as you leave. And don't come back, in the name of God."
With one last sip on the coffee, Johnny left the empty cup in the sink and went back to his living room.
His eyes widened when he noticed the huge amount of words on that piece of paper. He hadn't opened the envelope of the letter that his mother had sent him yet, but now he felt a chill in his spine signaling danger. He sat down comfortably on the sofa and started reading more carefully that list of rules.
"School at seven, pick up at five... You're shitting me?" raised his eyebrow. "On Sundays, exercise in the park... No sweets, carbonated drinks, fried foods or fatty foods. Only meals with vegetables, tofu and blah blah blah... Sugar-free candies, low-calorie foods... Is it a child or a cow for God's sake?" a grimace. "No TV for more than an hour, no Wi-Fi or electronic devices on weekdays... All right, this kid must have anger issues. I don't even want to imagine how's that going to end.
He ignored the rest of the list, not wanting to be more outraged than he already was, and opened the envelope to read his mother's letter.
He's seven years old, the rest you already know. I believe you received the rules you must follow during his stay. Do not cause me headaches by being stubborn and obey each one of those words, please. He doesn't need a friend, let alone your empathy, so don't get attached. You would be the last person I would turn to, it's not a responsibility I believe you're ready for, but I didn't have a choice, your father would also be at risk. Just don't screw it up. This is really important.
