Max Dixon's POV
The next day we got to work on the yard of the prison. T, Carol, Rick, Dad and I went down to the gate and brought our vehicles in and parked them on the west side of the gate. "Good, now we need to load up these corpses so we can burn 'em."Rick states.
"It's gonna be a long day."T says. "Where's Glenn and Maggie? We could use some help."Carol asks. "Up in the guard tower."I say as I point towards it. "Guard tower? They were just up there last night."Rick says as we all look towards the tower.
"Glenn! Maggie!"Dad yells at them. Soon the door to the guard tower opens and a shirtless Glenn steps out as he buttons his pants. "Hey, what's up, guys?"Glenn asks causing us all to laugh. "You coming?"My dad asks. "What?"Glenn says confused as we continue to laugh.
"You comin'?"Dad asks again as Glenn looks at Maggie confused. "Come on, we could use a hand."Dad calls as we turn back towards the cars. "Yeah, we'll be right down."Glenn calls after us. We all head towards the cars to get ready to start moving the walker bodies when T calls out for Rick.
We stop and turn to where T is looking and see the two last standing prisoners are outside. We all quickly follow Rick as he heads up towards them. What the hell are they doing out here? We get up to them and stop as they walk a little closer.
"That's close enough. We had an agreement."Rick states as Maggie and Glenn come out of the guard tower from behind them. "Please, mister. We know that. We made a deal. But you gotta understand, we can't live in that place another minute. You follow me? All the bodies, people we knew. Blood, brains everywhere. There's ghosts." Axel explains.
"Why don't you move the bodies out?"I ask. "You should be burning tjem."T states. "We tried. We did."Axel says. "Fence is down on the far side of the prison. Every time we drag a body out, those things just line up. Dropping the bodies and just running back inside."The black man states.
"Look, we had nothing to do with Thomas and Andrew. Nothing. You trying to prove a point? You proved it, bro. We'll do whatever it takes to be part of your group. Just please, please, don't make us live on that place."Axel pleads. I feel kinda bad for him but we can't trust him. Who knows what he did to get thrown in prison in the first place.
"Our deal is not negotiable. You either live on your cell block, or you leave."Rick states.
"I told you this was a waste of time. They ain't no different than the pricks who shot up our boys. You know how many friends' corpses we had to drag out this week? Just threw 'em out, like. Humph. These were good guys. Good guys who had our backs against the really bad dudes in the joint, like Thomas and Andrew. We've all made mistakes to get in here, chief. And I'm not gonna pretend to be a saint, but believe me, we've paid our due, enough that we would rather hit that road than to go back into that shithole."The black man says.
Rick turns and looks dad for his opinion. Dad shakes his head no. Rick then leads the prisoners over to the gate and locks them in as we all then decide what to do with them. Are you serious? You want them living in a cell next to you? They'll just be waiting for a chance to grab our weapons. You want to go back to sleeping with one eye open?"Rick asks T.
"I never stopped. Bring them into the fold. If we send them off packing, we might as well execute them ourselves."T states. "I don't know. Axel seems a little unstable."Glenn says. "After all we've been through? We fought so hard for all this, what if they decide to take it?"Carol asks.
"It's just been us for so long. They're strangers. I don't, it feels weird all of a sudden to have these other people around."Maggie says. "You brought us in."T says. "Yeah, but you turned up with a shot boy in your arms. Didn't give us a choice."Maggie states. "They can't even kill walkers."Glenn says.
"They're convicts, bottom line."Carol says. "Those two might actually have less blood on their hands than we do."T says. "I get guys like this. Hell, I grew up with them. They're degenerates, but they ain't psychos. I could have been in there with them just as easy as I'm out here with you guys."Dad states.
"So are you with me?"T asks. "Hell, no. Let 'em take their chances out on the road just like we did."Dad says. "What I'm saysing, Daryl-"T starts but Rick interrupts him. "When I was a rookie, I arrested this kid. 19 years old, wanted for stabbing his girlfriend. The kid blubbered like a baby during the interrogation, during the trial, suckered the jury. He was acquitted due to insufficient evidence and then, 2 weeks later, shot another girl. We've been through too much. Our deal with them stands."Rick says before walking away with Dad, Glenn, Maggie, Carol and I following him.
We then set to work on piling up the walker bodies. I couldn't help but let my mind wander to the prisoners. Should we let them in? I mean sure they could be dangerous but they could also be helpful. God, this reminds me of Randall. Dale wanted to keep him alive and let him stay with us. Dale. I miss him. He was so kind and always new what to say. He gave great advise whenever you needed it.
I wish he was still here with us. But he's not. These fucking walkers have to take everything from us. I look down at one and then I start to kick it over and over again as I let out my anger. It's there fault all these good people died. Jim, Jacque, Patricia, Otis, Jimmy, Dale, Sophia and many more.
I then felt a hand on my shoulder. I stop kicking and turn around to see my dad looking at me. I quickly hug him as if my life depended on it. He wraps his arms around me and hugs back as we just stand there. After a couple minutes I pull away and smile at him. "Thanks, I needed that."I say as I look at him. "Of course, little Dixon. I'm here for 'ya."Dad states. I nod before we head back over to the others that are standing together.
"We'll move the cars to the upper yard. Point 'em facing out. They'll be out of the way but ready to go if we ever need to bail."Rick orders. I quickly jog up to my cart and hop on it before putting the key in the ignition and starting it up. Maggie gets in Shanes old car while dad gets on his motorcycle and T gets on the truck. We all ride up through the gate in a line with Glenn closing the gate behind us.
We all then pull up along the inner fence in a line facing out for when we have to leave. After that I turn off my cart and jump out before heading back over to the others. Dad, Rick, Glenn and I were gonna head out and collect some fire wood to burn the walkers with while Maggie, T and Carol continued to move the cars.
We soon find some and Glenn, Rick and I each pick up a big bundle while dad holds his crossbow in case any walkers showed up. We walked back to the cut part of the fence and dad held it open while we walked in. "Looky here."Dad says pointing towards the prison. We look up and see Lori, Beth, Carl and Hershal outside with Hershal on crutches.
"He is one tough son of a bitch."Glenn says as as we pile up our wood. "All right, Hershal!"Glenn cheers as my dad shhs him and points towards some walkers that are coming closer to the fence. We then continue to watch Hershal with smiles in our faces.
Everyone noticed us and waved as we waved back. Then Carl shouted, "Walkers!" We look back and see big group of walkers inside the fence and heading towards Beth, Lori, Hershal, and Carl. Well, shit.
