Hard-knock life

Have you ever heard of 'hard-knock life'? I associate it with my wings on more than one occasion.

Nobody has found out about my wings. Nor my past. What they have as knowledge of me is that I have a big family, I'm 17, got the happiest life ever and I'm a goofy, jokester-slash-flirt who tells terrible jokes, is super dirt minded and that my name is Lance McClain.

But I don't have the happiest life that everyone thinks I do. My family was never real. That's right. I guess what you're thinking now is, "Oh so he's an orphan then." Yeah, I am.

I'm not 17. Well, in human tears (I'm crying 😭 "in human tears"- 👌👌 I'm not even gonna fix it) I am. But for us we age 5 years every year. I'm 85. Yeah, whatever. Say what you will. I'm an old grandpa, yeah okay. Shocking, isn't it? Shiro's not an old-old man no more. He's just an old man.

I'm actually pretty calm and serious. I'm not as carefree as I appear to be.

Jokester? Ever heard of a persona? A flirt? Yeah, I'm not as much of a flirt as everyone thinks I am. I am a bit of a flirt but over-the-top? Nah.

And my jokes are kinda terrible, I'll admit. I'm actually not dirty minded, i just did some research. Did my homework, that sort of thing. Yeah, yeah. Say whatever you want, whatever floats your boat.

I wish Allura would hurry. My wings have been hidden away for 8 hours. 2 hours for training, bonding exercises, with the team. 2 if you include all the crap Allura and Shiro just spouted and breakfast which also included more talking. 4 hours starting now as Allura is suggesting another bonding exercise.

Allura says, "It seems that we are connecting in the way we should, but we are not completely connected. But there are still secrets between us and that's not good. It can become our of proportion and we may have big problems happen because of them."

Well, yeah. That can happen but we don't have to share everything in our lives. A secret can be destructive but I don't think it would destroy all this.

Pidge furrows her brows. "We don't have to tell each other everything. A secret can be destructive but I don't figure we'll have that much of a problem."

Finally, some common sense-

"A secret like that couldn't possibly do some damage, if it was a big one."

My  mouth moves on its own. "Secrets are not just destructive, they're things that we keep to ourselves in hopes that nobody finds out. Or a secret can be kept in the form of a promise. Promises are associated with secrets in more ways than you think. Secrets have a long line in history. They have been used since the Earth first began. They can also be kept to keep someone from being hurt in some way or to protect them in the minds of the people who have those secrets and made those very promises."

Everyone looks at me, wide eyed.

Oh crap.

"Is there something of the matter?"

Pidge points at me like I'm from another planet. She's not wrong with the pointing though. "Why are you speaking like that? And you just said something smart. What the f-"

"Language." If you're surprised, Yes it was me who said that.

Keith raises an eyebrow. "Lance, did  you hit your head and suddenly gain some common sense?"

"Did you find that on the sarcasm free joint?"

Keith rolls his eyes. "Nope, still the same idiot."

I sigh. "Is it that time of the month already?"

Pidge snorts. "I'm sorry-" She tries not to laugh. "Okay," She coughs."That was pretty good, you gotta admit."
