Chapter 6 - Pick a Song
Ava closed her eyes as yet another person walked by her to go audition. Three were left. Four including her, and she still had yet to choose from which two songs to sing. There she was in a sound proof room the size of a phone booth twenty minutes away from auditioning and her mind had gone blank. She kept switching from singing both songs trying to figure out why she was even worried about it. Maybe she would just go in and sit down for the five minutes explaining to the judges that she wasn’t actually going to do anything.
Putting her hands to her head Ava tried to think. If she did that she wondered if Sydney would be able to find out.
Probably.
And the likely hood of her ending up on television would be increased because then she would be labeled the girl who refused to sing. Hearing a tapping on the door she turned to see Chris smiling on the other side of the glass.
Opening it she waited for him to speak, “Any luck?” He asked. She paused before speaking, how was it that he didn’t even seem to be worried? He only had one person in front of him and yet there he was asking a question she didn’t know how to answer.
“W-What do you mean?” She asked, wondering where his brother was and why he would use the few minutes he had left to talk to her. He shrugged “You look like you are having a mini mental breakdown; I thought maybe the song wasn’t coming out like you wanted”.
Ava looked down wishing she had never been guilt tripped into coming. “It’s not that…” she said trying to figure out the right words that would make him understand. How could he though? This was his dream just like Sydney's and everyone else who were there to audition. They had probably known what song to sing weeks ago. Making sure each detail of their audition would be just right.
Taking a breath she decided just to say it, did it really matter what he thought? It wasn’t like they would ever see each other again anyways. “I can’t figure out what song to sing” she said, barely able to hear her own words above the beating of her heart.
Chris gestured to the rows of empty chairs. She followed him, remembering how they were once filled with the families and friends that had to wait while the person they knew warmed up and got their make-up done.
Sitting down she tried to relax her round up nerves. But it was like leaving the sound proof room made it worse. Out in the middle she could see how empty the room now was, the cameras, even the wires that seemed to come from everywhere. Watching as Chris looked through his camera bag she wondered what he was looking for.
“So I think I know how you can pick your song” he said, pulling out his hand. Ava’s face scrunched, there was nothing there. Or nothing she could see at least. He opened up his closed fist revealing the object that had been hidden.
“A penny” Ava said doubtfully, waiting for him to explain. How could a penny help her pick what song to sing? He smiled and looked around the room as if checking to make sure no one was close enough to hear them. “It’s a magical penny” he said, leaning in closer towards Ava.
“Please tell me you are not about to start quoting Jack and the Bean Stalk” Ava said, crossing her arms as anger ran through her. Did he not get how serious this was? She already knew she wasn’t getting pass but if people were going to hear her sing horribly she at least wanted it to be a song she liked.
“Stop looking at me as if I’m a loon. Just give me a chance to explain” Ava narrowed her eyebrows waiting. He had a very short time frame before she got up and went to find Sydney.
“Here. Take the penny” Chris said, reaching out and giving her the small object. “Now close your eyes” she did as she was told but not before peaking around the room to see if maybe someone was filming this. “Okay, pick heads or tails. It doesn’t matter which” Chris said, instructing her while she continued to feel like a total idiot.
