he lies on the sand, soaking up the sun
absorbing golden light with tanned, smooth skin
lolling ocean waves a soothing melody
salty sea breeze crisp and cool on his face.
do you hear him?

he stands on the shore, watching the sea
feeling pearl flicks of foam on salt-crusted cheeks
the icy smooth pull of the tide drawing him in
gull shrieks and children's laughter fading.
do you see him?

he swims in the waves, dipping and diving
ebbing and flowing with the emerald ocean
diamond light refracting off curling crests
he turns his head back to shore.
do you feel him?

he could keep swimming forever, he thinks
he could keep swimming until he is
nothing more than a speck
on the horizon.
the sea is silent
still as glass
he turns his head around.
you can't hear him
you can't see him
you can't feel him
you can't miss him

so he swims

disappearing into the heart of the ocean
cradled in the bosom of the sea
