The next day, Betty decided to go back to school.
"Isn't it too early to be going back to school?" Tony asked.
"I've missed so much school already, I want to catch up as fast as I can."
"I forgot how smart you were, honey. You'll do fine at school. Take it easy." Tony hugged his daughter. "I have to go now. I'm so sorry. I'll be back to check on you. I love you."
He turned and headed towards the door. Betty grabbed her bag and winter coat to get ready for school.
"Call your mother, Lizzie."
"Alright, dad."
Betty swung her backpack over her shoulder and went out the door.
She turned the street to see Peter standing awkwardly on the sidewalk. Betty looked side to side before walking over to him.
"Peter, what are you doing here?"
"I was in the... neighborhood..?" He scratched the back of his neck.
"Peter, Veronica's house is across town and we have 20 minutes until school, so..." Betty raised her eyebrows.
"I..I.." he sighed. "I was just coming to check on you, you know, what happened with your mom, but I see you're already going back to school."
"Well, thanks for thinking of us, but everything's okay. She's just a little shocked and I want to get back as soon as possible." Betty turned her head. "Walk me to school, I guess?"
"Yeah, yeah sure."
The two of them walked side by side.
"So, how have you been?" Betty asked.
"I've been good. I joined the academic decathlon team last month. I was taking your place for the time being. Are you going to stay on the team?"
"I'll try, but I need to catch up on the rest of my work. I don't even know if MJ will let me stay on the team."
"I talked to her already, when I joined. I didn't want to be replacing you completely, so I asked her if you can stay on the team. She says it's fine because you're really smart." Peter smiled at her.
"Thank you so much! You are a lifesaver."
They walked in silence for a while.
"You know, Peter, we should become closer friends." Betty tightened her ponytail. "I mean, Veronica's already one of my good friends, so we have that connection. Plus, you're so nice to me and I wanna do something to return your kindness."
"Um, sure, I would love to be friends."
"Okay, I'll treat you to dinner at pops, tonight. 5:30 meet me there." Betty demanded.
"Fine by me. Looking forward to it." Peter and Betty blushed and looked away from each other.
Peter's phone vibrated in his pocket. He picked up the phone.
"You go ahead." He pointed at the school in the distance. "Hey, May!"
"Peter, what did Hermione tell me about a robbery? It sounded really dangerous." She said.
"It's nothing, May. Everyone is okay. It was late at night when I was sleeping. We are all okay." He answered.
"Fine, but remember, if you see anything like that, you run the other direction. Don't make me regret letting you living with the Lodge's." May replied.
"Alright, May. I've got to get to school."
"Love you, Peter. Be careful."
"Love you..." his voice trailed off as he pulled up beside Ned on the street.
"You were here?" He looked concerned.
"Yeah, it was intense."
They continued on their path to school, walking with Betty.
"Betty, so uh what happened?" He asked. Her face was frozen and her hands here shaking.
"M-my mom was here last night."
"Woah, cool!" Ned exclaimed. She titled her head, glaring at him. "Ned.." Peter whispered.
"I don't mean that she saw it happen, I mean that she was in the shop." She explained. Ned lowered his head, apologizing. "I got a call from her last night and she was struggling, crushed underparts of the building." Betty was shaking as she spoke.
Unconsciously, Peter placed his hand on her shoulder. She tensed up a bit, but relaxed when he rubbed his fingers, tracing them down her arm. Their eyes met for a few seconds when they both turned at the same time. The moment passed and they broke eye contact, quickly heading to school
Betty's POV:
The officers filled the crime scene. My hands were shaking uncontrollably. I couldn't believe that Alice was here last night. I started wondering something odd because I didn't hear about this from my dad. He didn't call to tell me what was happening or what had happened to Alice. Which means, there was a robbery going on, my dad wasn't there, but the Register and bank were still blown to pieces.
Something else had caused all this damage. I know Spiderman was in town, but it couldn't have been him doing all this. All he really does is swing around and shoot webs. This was caused by explosions or other weapons.
Peter had finished his call and met up with Ned and I. They asked about what had happened last night and about Alice. My whole body started trembling. I didn't know why exactly, but I felt this weird energy pulse through my veins. I couldn't really wrap my head around the fact that I had mysterious powers. Did I have this my whole life? Only Archie, Jug and Veronica knew a bit about it. My dad said I couldn't tell anyone either because they didn't know what I could do yet.
I could feel my shoulders tensing up while I spoke. My muscles tightened but were relaxed by a soft touch. I turned my head and realized it was Peter. Everything around blurred. I gazed over at him. His brown eyes looked softly at me. A piece of his hair blew in the wind. There were bits of snowflakes that had drifted on the top of his head and stuck on his eyelashes.
Peter shook his head and let his eyes wander back towards the path. I stared for another second. I never noticed how good he actually looked. Shaking my head as well, I remembered Jughead. It was odd. I don't know the amount of time that had passed when we were looking at each other, but throughout the whole time, I forgot about Jughead.
I know how horrible that is. I felt like I was cheating on him. I was happy with Jughead and Jughead was happy with me. Right...? Lately, I've been worried about him. He seems different. I understand how hard it was for him when I wasn't here. I need to spend more time with him.
Peter, Ned and I walked another 10 minutes to school. We had a pretty great time chatting with each other.
