A New Development

We got up and went to the door in the back of his office. When he opened the door I felt a hard blast of AC. I wrapped my arms around myself and shivered.

"Why is it so cold?"

"Sorry. I run hot and if I don't have it cold in here I become a sweaty disgusting mess." My teeth chattered as I followed him farther into the room. It reminded me of the room Fia and I awakened my powers in. It was a very large all-white room with nothing in it. Zax continued his explanation. "Once we get started you won't feel as cold. You'll just have to bear it for now."

I shook out my hands and my body, trying to prepare myself for anything.

"So what's first?"

"First I'm going to have you get better at accessing your power and the pain. Every time you use your power I want you to tell me on a scale of 1-10 how bad the pain is. Ten being the worst and one being almost no pain. If there is no pain you can also tell me zero." I nodded.

"What should I call?"

"Whatever you feel would be the easiest for you. It's your power, I'll let you decide what's best. I'm acting merely as an observer and researcher right now."

"I thought you just did that."

"Well, part of being a researcher is using data to create a theory and then collecting further data to help you further develop your theory."

"Okay, enough with the science talk."

"I'm not the one holding up the process. Get started." He said chuckling. I smiled back at him. He's like an older brother. He's so easy to get along with, I still can't believe he also tortures people. I stood still with my hand on my hip for a few minutes as I thought about what would be easiest for me to call up. Maybe water since I've already done that twice before? But I also want to try something else. I focused my mind on a single object. When I felt I was completely focused on it and my desire for it was consuming me I spoke.

"Tasty glazed donut on a plate." I felt pain spark to life in my throat and a delicious, steaming glazed donut appeared on a plate in front of me. A smile burst across my face.

"A tasty glazed donut? Seriously?" Zax asked and laughed.

"Don't laugh. I'm hungry!" I picked up the donut and took a huge bite out of it.

"How is it?" I didn't respond to him. I was too wrapped up in the bliss the taste of the donut brought me. I heard him laughing in the background, but ignored it and stuffed the rest of the donut in my face.

"I want another one."

"Well call another one. And one for me too. But before you do that, tell me how the pain is." I thought about it before answering:

"It's around a two. Not bad at all."

"Okay good," he said and scribbled something down on another clipboard. Where did he get that from? "I'm wondering if I should have you call bigger and more complicated things into existence or have you call a larger number of something simple first?" He paused. "We'll eventually get to all of it. For now, try to call two more donuts into existence and then switch to a non-perishable object because I'm gonna make you call a lot."

"Okay." I pictured another plate of donuts on my head but this time with 2 on the plate. " Two tasty glazed donuts." My mouth water and my throat burned as they appeared.

"Is saying 'tasty' really necessary?"

"Yes! I want tasty donuts, not bad ones." Zax and I shoved the donuts in our faces quickly and licked our fingers clean.
