It was late at night and I couldn't sleep. Henry was supposed to be out sleeping on the couch so I decided to see if he was awake so that way maybe there would be something for me to do. I went out, looking around but the room was empty. I went to go out to ask Officer Jackson if he saw him leave when I froze in my tracks.
Henry was in the front seat of the cruiser with him, the two of them kissing roughly. I hurried back inside, my stomach churning uneasily. Something about this just wasn't settling right with me. I went to my bedroom and searched my laptop before finding the phone number I wanted and giving the person a call.
"Tanya Freeman, private investigator," the person on the other line said.
"I need your help, but I don't think I can pay your usual rates," I said.
"What is the situation?" She asked.
"My fiancé was kidnapped," I said.
"Have you already gone to the police?" She asked.
"Yes, but they don't have any information," I said. "And the lead detective on the case is screwing my brother and the bunny men keep taunting me and want me to kill my baby, and they keep forcing me to play all these stupid mind games that are just driving me insane. And I don't have enough money to pay you and I'm sixteen weeks pregnant and my fiancé has been gone for months and there's no sign of him coming back."
It was silent on the other end of the line as I sobbed.
"I can give you a discount," she said. "It sounds like you really need me and I came into this line of work to help people."
"I do really need the help," I said.
"Can I meet with you for coffee tomorrow morning?" She asked. "It's almost eleven."
"Well, I'm kind of too scared to actually leave the house," I said. "Last time I did they cut me with a knife."
"You're in danger and you're pregnant?" She asked. "I can't just sit back and let that happen. Is there any chance I could come over now?"
"Yes!" I cheered. "Yes! Of course you can come over now, I would love for you to."
"The longest time it's ever taken me to solve a case was eighteen hours and the kid was gone for months, maybe I'll be able to find your fiancé by morning," she said.
I gave her my address before I hung up. I got dressed and waited by the door, opening it happily when she came. She was tall, that's the first thing I noticed. Tall and beautiful with dark caramel skin and completely natural, curly black hair.
"Hello, Miss Robinson," she said. "I'm Tanya."
"You can just call me Emma," I said. "Thank you so much for coming."
"Of course," she said. "Now, give me all the information you can about this case."
"Yes, well, my boyfriend was on tour when some men in these creepy ass bunny masks came and grabbed him and took him into a van. And they keep sending me all these videos and pictures and following me around," I explained, pulling out my phone to access the photos and videos.
She nodded, looking over everything carefully after putting on some glasses.
"Would you like some coffee?" I asked, and she nodded. "How do you take it?"
