The lesson began as Noelle's mind went haywire. Dread took over her whole body at the thought of her past catching up with her and Rory was a big reminder of her old life, which she had left in the gutter.

She was snapped back into reality by Oscar kicking her chair, nodding for her to pay attention. She tuned back in to her teacher's lecture.
"And while French culture was the dominant outside cultural influence, especially for Russia's monied class, English culture also had its impact. Tolstoy's favorite author, for instance, was. . ." Mr Remmy droned on in a monotoned voice before pausing for an answer.
Unsurprisingly, Paris' hand shot up, and without waiting for a response she quickly answered, "Dickens."
"Yes. And of course, last week we discovered Dostoevski's main authorial influences. . ."
Noelle shared a glance with Oscar as she mouthed, as Paris said "George Sand and Balzac."
The friends shared a smile, while Rory looked around in shock and confusion at the rest of the class for Paris' quick answers.
"Good. As Tolstoy commenced writing both War and Peace and Anna Karenina, Count Leo would turn to. . ."
"David Copperfield." Noelle and Paris said. Paris bitterly looked over to Noelle, who sent her a cheery smile while she held her pen in between her teeth.
"Correct. He would turn to David Copperfield for inspiration."
Thankfully breaking the routine of the boring lecture, the door was pushed open and a blonde student strode in, drawing the teachers attention.
"Ah, Mr. Dugray." He greeted.
Noelle looked over to Tristan with a smile as he looked around and sent her a wink.
"Sir." Tristan said as he handed Mr Remmy a note, which Noelle was sure he had written himself.
"Nice to have you back. I hope your Grandfather's better." Mr Remmy kindly but naively said.
Oscar leant over his desk and whispered in Noelle's ear "Please, three of his grandfathers have died in the last five years." He joked, before he was shushed by a giggling Noelle.
"Much better, sir." Tristan replied with a smirk.
"Good. Take your seat, please."
Tristan languidly strolled over to his seat while staring at Rory, causing her to shift uncomfortably with the attention.
Tristan took the empty seat in front of Noelle and as soon as he sat down, she threw her pen lid at him, trying to get his attention. He glanced at her over his shoulder with a raised eyebrow as she leant forward over her desk.
"So how did the parents react to the party?" She whispered.
"Oh they loved it." He sarcastically responded. "That's why they sent me to my grandparents for a week."
"I warned you." She singsonged, getting an eye roll in response.
Tristan returned to staring at Rory as he leant back in his seat and whispered to Noelle, "Who's that?"
Noelle looked up and followed Tristan's gaze over to Rory before uncertainly replying, "Rory, a new girl."
As class was dismissed Tristan muttered over to his friend on his left, "Looks like we got ourselves a Mary."
After hearing Tristan, Noelle rolled her eyes, remembering why she had a love hate relationship with the boy.
"There he goes." Noelle muttered to Oscar as they left the classroom.
"Typical." Oscar replied.
Noelle hesitated at the door for a moment causing Oscar to ask her, "Hey, you coming?"
"Umm actually, I'll meet you there okay? Save me a seat." She uneasily said, getting a nod in reply.
Noelle lingered by the door, taking deep breaths to ready herself.

Rory exited the classroom carrying a large binder filled with the teachers notes. As Noelle took one last deep breath, Rory bumped right into Paris nearly dropping all her books across the polished floors.
"Oh." Rory let out in shock, steadying herself.
"I'm Paris." She harshly greeted.
"I didn't see you there. Where'd you come from?" Rory asked in disorientation, not yet understanding the strange ways of Paris Geller.
"I know who you are, too. Lorelai Gilmore from Stars Hollow." She stated ominously.
"You can call me Rory." She uneasily responded.
"Are you going out for the Franklin?" Paris aggressively asked, finally getting to her point. Paris's predictability caused Noelle to roll her eyes as she leant against the lockers waiting to talk to Rory.
"The what?" Rory replied, barely knowing where her next classroom was, let alone the name of the newspaper.
"Nice innocent act. At least I know you're not going out for drama club."
"I'm confused."
"The Franklin, the school paper, are you going out for it?"
"I don't know, I have to find my locker first."
"I'm gonna be editor next year."
"Well, good for you."
"I'm also the top of the class, and I intend to be valedictorian when I graduate."
"Okay, I'm going now."
"You'll never catch up. You'll never beat me. This school is my domain and the Franklin is my domain. And don't you ever forget that." Paris yelled as she walked away from Rory.
"Guess you're not gonna let me borrow your notes, huh?" Rory muttered sarcastically after her.
"Ignore Paris. She's more intense than the workload, but as long as you steer clear she's pretty harmless. For the most part anyway." Noelle advised as she walked over to Rory.
Rory's head whipped around at the new, but familiar, voice.
"You're blonde." Rory stated.
"I am." Noelle laughed.
"You didn't use to be."
"No I didn't."
"I haven't seen you in..." Rory paused, trying to work out how long it had been since she had seen her childhood friend.
"Three years." Noelle interrupted.
The girls stood in an awkward silence, not sure how to handle the situation.
"What's your next class?"
"Biology with Foster." Rory quickly read off from her timetable.
"Oh right. Foster's not too bad, I had him last year. Do you want me to show you the room?" Noelle kindly offered despite the awkward atmosphere.
"I think I've got it but thanks."
"Right. Well I got to get going. See you around Rory." Noelle said as she started walking away, already late for her next class.
