What If I'm Dreaming...

Staring at the ceiling
reeling
asleep, awake, for goodness sake
consciousness blurring
mind is whirring
wishing I could stay asleep (awake)
wishing it wasn't so warm
wishing I had something to drink
wishing it wasn't so dry in this desert
wishing I could get to the top of this dune
I'm just so sick of walking
of the sun
of the sweat
of the sheets on my back
I just want to go back to sleep (wake up)
and leave my bedroom behind
and find rest
so I lay my head down in the sand
on the hot burning sand
and hope the water won't reach me
hoping the shade won't leave me
hoping the gulls will quiet
hoping this breeze doesn't calm
hoping my eyelids can finally close
laying on this beach (bed)
feeling my fingers sink into the sand (sheets)
feeling my body sink into the sand (sheets)
feeling it rise up and over me
like a blanket
swallowed up
like fog
like a cloud
the sky is falling away
and the earth rushes up to meet me
the burning sand
so fine
in the desert (on the beach) in my eyes
like a million stars
outside my window
awake again (asleep again)
maybe if I keep my eyes closed
the nightmare will end
maybe I can wake up
