Tap tap tap.
Alex's fingers drum on the side of her cage, showing how worried she really is, though her face is blank as she leans against the bars.
Tap tap tap.
Carter is still gone. My body is cold and numb, and I torture myself with the possibilities.
Tap tap tap.
Every now and then I hear Alex whispering things to console me, though I bet she doesn't believe half of them. My body is still, I tune out her words and lean against the far wall suddenly exsaughsted. My eyelids feel heavy and I black out easily. Though even in my sensless state, I still hear a sound echoing inside my head.
Tap tap tap.

I clutch the bars of my cage and claw at the turned back of the scientist that is walking away with a baby kitten. I had heard a pained yowl that drew me from my darkened sleepless state of being and bolted up inside my cage, looking around in fright. They can't even protect themselves, and right now neither can I! I'm not in much of a position to make demands...such as--DON'T TOUCH THE MOTHER, SHE'S PREGNANT!
It takes all I have not to scream bloody murder when another white-coat takes the kittens' sickly and very pregnant mother. I am very sensitive when it comes to babies and animals in general.
Cart has been gone for a very long time, but not having a clock or any light that isn't artificial I can't tell how much has passed since she was taken. I faintly hear Alex's reassurances, though they are weak. My body is shaking, I can feel it with my grip on the stationary bars that something is moving, and I doubt it is the metal. I realize Alex is trying to talk to me when I feel the slight pressure on my arm, and strain to focus and hear beyond the loud buzzing in my ears that wants to block everything but my haunted thoughts out.
"...come back soon safe, okay? They won't kill her..." she says when I am able to concentrate enough. "Just calm down, you are shaking..." I look down at my trembling pale hand gripping the bar and shake my head trying to clear it. I imagine Carter back here and what she would be saying if she saw me like this. Slowly, I calm down not wanting to rid myself of the thoughts.
"Hey X?" I call out with a soft thoughtful voice. She looks at me, straight in the eyes and I feel even more calm, completely forgetting about the cats at the moment.
"Yes?"
"...when is Carter getting back?"
