Chapter 31: Carter’s POV

I was visiting my old town with Andy and Camilla. Like a family vacation almost. I was planning on going to my mother’s law firm today. I am really curious on how that will turn out. I think I already have an idea though. Right now, we were just visiting some old friends of mine and I drove by my old house before my mom moved out to do date the mayor.

There engaged now, it’s all over the town newspaper.

Extra! Extra! Read all about it! Marilyn Anderson and Mayor Thomas Rucker are engaged and getting married in the town park! Let’s just show it off! I wish they could fucking read some headlines of mine: Mayor’s Fiancée has a step daughter he doesn’t’ know about! Or: She has a fake master’s degree! I should seriously become a journalist.

But of course, I was getting married first this fall in October. I wanted to be kind of scary and demotic. It’s weird I’m like cute and fuzzy all the time and now I wanted to have a gothic wedding? I felt it just fit. I think I might dress Camilla up as Wednesday Adams.

                Who knows?

But we were pushing the stroller down the sidewalk till I saw her large stone sign in site. I started at the name and I cringed my nose a bit. I could see Andy chuckling at my disgusted expression. We walked up the pathway as I took Camilla out of her stroller and let Andy fold up the stroller.

I opened the door, walking in as Andy left the stroller near the door. I walked up to the receptionist who remembered me almost immediately as her eyes widened when we walked in. She was the same woman I met years ago. “Hi.” I smiled at her. “I am here to see my mother.” I told her.

“I never thought I would see you here again.” She laughed lightly and I passed a smile to her. “I remember when you two walked in, talking about just starting out together, I now see a ring on that hand and a baby in your arms!” She grinned. I swear this is the nicest receptionist ever. She picked up the phone and dialed the number to my mom’s room. “You have a visitor!” She said before putting the phone down.

Andy and I nodded a thank you before heading down the hallway. I hated all the awards she had on the walls and her posing with important people in the law career. I saw her door with her name in silver lettering on the side. I opened the door and I saw her on her computer.

                Just like last time.

“You are?” She frowned. Still like last time. She’s really good at forgetting her kids.

“Carter.” Was all I said. She blinked. “Your daughter. You forgot who I was last time.” I frowned at her.

“Hello.” She said, turning away from her computer. She thought Andy would ruin me all those years ago. Look at me now. Black hair, a baby, a ring on my ring finger. Her eyes went to the small baby in my arms. Batman onesies.

                “Camilla.” I said simply.

“Y-You had a baby?” She stuttered.

“Month old.” I said stiffly. “She was born 6 weeks early.” I said to her. “I’m getting married in the fall.” I said, I showed zero expression in my voice. “You thought Andy would ruin me.” I laughed lightly which Camilla found somewhat interesting. “You’re wrong.” I grinned at her.

“I found her by the way in case you didn’t notice.” Andy said, taking Camilla from my arms. “You’re lucky we didn’t press charges.” Andy smirked. “Kidnapping? Really?” He laughed along with me. Camilla laughed as well which I found hilarious.

“I get it! You have the perfect life. I tried to ruin your life and now I am apparently a grandmother. I get that you want to show how wrong I was but I don’t care! I wish you never walked this earth- holding the blood of your fathers mixed with mine. You’re lucky you’re here because if I could erase you I sure would.” She growled.

“If I could have the law your fake master’s degree erased I would.” I heard Andy’s playful smirk. “Seems like we all wished we had a magic eraser.” He chuckled.  “I also want to erase the bitch out of you but even that’s too strong to be erased.” He hissed. “It’s almost like tattooed into your bitter soul.” He growled.

“When I was a girl, I would take care of you… almost like we switched roles. Why are you playing mother now when I have been doing it my entire life? At least now I have a reason.” I said to her. Andy was trying to keep Camilla distracted from the commotion.

“Leave my office.” She said simply.

“Gladly.” I sneered before leaving with Andy and going back into the waiting room. We left the law firm and I placed her back in the stroller. I swear I loved her so much. Andy had grown really attached to her as well.

“Do you still want to visit your dad?” He asked me. I thought for a moment.

“We have one more stop to make.” I said and Andy frowned at me. “Do you want to meet the Mayor?” I asked him. “I think there are a few things he doesn’t know.” I said, a playfulness in my voice.
