Definition:

a mental condition characterized by feelings of severe despondency and dejection, typically also with feelings of inadequacy and guilt, often accompanied by lack of energy and disturbance of appetite and sleep

Common Symptoms: 

Feelings of helplessness and hopelessness.

Loss of interest in daily activities.

 Appetite or weight changes.

Sleep changes.

Anger or irritability.

Loss of energy.

Self-loathing. 

Reckless behavior.

Concentration problems.

 

Stereotypes: 

“Happy people can’t possibly be depressed” - depression can be in anyone example Robin Williams. He was a comedian who died from suicide in 2014.

“Depression isn’t a real illness” - depression is real, it wasn’t created by random people who came up with as an excuse for how their feeling.
