“It’s either a juvenile detention center or a boarding school for troubled boys, your parents have given me what they wish to happen but I want your opinion, Mr. Payne, because this does evolve you.” The balding judge said nasally to me, I had been in this courtroom for what has felt like ages and I was angry. Why did everyone seem to think I have a problem, I don’t have one damnit, I just like playing with fire. Since when has that been a bad thing? Cavemen are famous for thinking up fire, I’m famous too now, just for a very bad reason…So, I set a house on fire, it was an accident, they put their trashcans too close to their house…Not my problem! Well, now it is since they are suing me, saying I am insane or something, BUT I’M NOT. I just like fire and I wish people could understand that, it’s not a big deal to me. I have to decide between a center, that would look terrible on my university applications or a school, that will mark me forever as a “troubled boy”, what was I suppose to decided? “Mr. Payne, I do not have all day son, I have other cases.” This was a life changing choice, how would I even know if the school was going to be up to my academic level? I don’t want to make the wrong choice and being labeled forever, why was life so hard for an underage pyromaniac?
“I…Sir, how will I know if I am making the best decision if I don’t know what school I would going too? Is there a school you already have picked out? One my parents want me to go to? I want to make sure it would be better than the center, that it will meet my academic standards.” I said to the judge from my seat next to my attorney, who was glaring at me because I had insulted his intelligence earlier today and he was still upset about it. It’s not my fault he didn’t know how to spell the word ‘Pyromaniac’, he knew what I was accused of when he took on my case, dumb arse.
“Your parents and I decided, that James Hobbs’ School for Troubled Boys, it’s an American boarding school.” The judge said in his gruffly old man voice as he had the bailiff hand me a pamphlet, which had information about the school on it.
“I’ll choose to go to the boarding school, sir, I want a chance to get the best education I can.” I said, not sparing a look at my parents or attorney, this was my choice and I needed to do what was best.
“I think you are making a good choice, Mr. Payne, other than your bad habit with fire, you’re a sound lad.” The judge said as he started filling out paper work, “You’ll have to attend the school until you graduate, which is four years but your education will not get interrupted.” I was glad the judge seemed to understand that I wasn’t crazy, I just had a fascination with something unusual, I didn’t mean to hurt anyone. I wouldn’t have hurt anyone if those trashcans were farther way from the house, I mean, I just lit a trashcan…or five on fire, not my fault the house was in the way. Okay, technically it was my fault because I didn’t need to set the fire, but if they wouldn’t have thrown away so much paper, it wouldn’t have tickled my fancy. The judge finished his paper work, had the bailiff allows us to leave and hands me the paper work. My parents have to pay for the damages done to the house, I just get sent away to a place for four years.
