Thwack!
An arrow split a branch in half by the middle, barely missing the target. Leaves scattered and twigs snapped under rushing bare feet and hooves, neither group knowing where they were going. Sudden movements sending small animals skittering and giving away positions. Crossbows loaded, swords readied, horses galloping through a dense forest, the peaceful nature of the woods ruined by this conflict. The horses tugged and pulled, some even tripping over roots, sending their riders tumbling. Men shouted at the top of their lungs, firing crossbows at any sudden movement nearby, vision obscured by leaves and shadows.
Snap.
The men stopped, grouping together. Staring intently at the shadows, finger on the trigger. Their masks clogging their visions even more. The only thing audible was their rushing heart rate and unstable breath. Even the horses were uneasy...Shifting around silently. Wind brushed against one of the many bushes, causing the men to snap towards it. One of the horses made a nervous whine, backing up and tugging.
Silence.
A horse suddenly screeched and began galloping, tossing the man off harshly. The warriors pointed the crossbows towards the right, seeing the white, tattered dress rush through the trees. A brown sack with a golden lace in her hand.
"FIRE!"
The bows flew past her, one whizzing past her and grazing her arm. She didn't even notice it, running for her life. Reloading the crossbows, the warriors galloped after her. More fire, more shouting. She needed to get out. Now.
The girl saw a light, immediately heading towards it. She was exhausted and frail due to being chased for days, but this was no time to slow down. Thorns stuck into her legs, scratches everywhere on her body. The galloping became fainter, the men's shouting fading as well. A wall with a small opening, only being able to fit one horse. Desperately clawing for salvation, she made her way to the other side...Then stopped. A cliff side prevented her from progressing, but the men were catching up. She needed to go, now. Sand covered the landscape below, and a temple was prominently standing tall in the center...And sixteen pillars of light pierced the sky. With nowhere left to go, she crawled under the platform and slid down the only remaining bar holding the platform up. Her landing was harsh, but she survived nonetheless. The men had lost her. Relief overwhelmed her...then exhaustion.
Heaving a sigh, she collapsed onto the sand, passing out.
