Summary
Serving the royal family of Hoshido was never easy, yet you were never happier during your time there. Even with the age difference of you and king Sumeragi, you worked your way from nothing to become his retainer. Ryoma had helped you as much as he could, taking time to train with you when he could. You eventually ask to serve directly under the king, to protect and advise when needed. Sumeragi agreed, much to queen Mikoto's approval since she always wanted him to take a retainer. After the fateful night Sumeragi falls, you cast yourself away from Hoshido, seeing you had failed your only purpose. This was against Mikoto's wishes, knowing what happened was out of your hands but nevertheless you leave anyway. Ryoma begs you to stay but his words fall on deaf ears, only finally reconnecting with you when you reunite during the war.
Story
Swords clashed, metal scraping against metal ringing out across the courtyard. There was a brief moment of quiet before it happened again, metal banging against metal. The sun would beat down on the two, making sweat form across their brow. Neither one of the pair could of been too old, yet they were both equally skilled with a blade. Taking a moment to catch her breath, the young girl tossed her sword on the ground to signal her submission for now. She would stand up straight then pull her hair back, sunlight beaming down on her {s/c} skin.
"If this was a real fight, you wouldn't be able to take a break {Y/n}." Ryoma said once he put his own sword away, holding a small smirk across his lips.
"If this was a real fight, I wouldn't dream of taking a break." She rebutted, her eyes following him when he walked over. They then both walked to the side of the courtyard to get something to drink. Ryoma handed her the canteen and she drank before handing it back to him. He took what he needed from it then set it down.
"You're still sure this is what you want {Y/n}?" He asked.
Today was the day she was to present herself to Sumeragi and ask to take up position as his retainer. Of course, her age worried her, thinking he was looking for a more experienced guard. In truth, there was no one more qualified to guard Sumeragi. Yes she was young but her skill was hard to beat, and she was certain she already had Mikoto's approval.
"Yes, my father gave his life for Sumeragi and so will I." She said, her voice determined.
"You could be my retainer instead if you wanted?" He said, giving a light chuckle.
"I feel like that would be a conflict of interest." She replied before grabbing her things.
"How so?" Ryoma asked.
In return she shrugged before walking off to the palace, Ryoma following behind. "It would just feel odd, I'd feel weird taking orders directly from you since I really like to challenge your authority." She admitted, making him laugh. When Ryoma asked her to do something she would laugh most the time and tell him she didn't serve him. It was a refreshing change, making Ryoma need to get on her good side of he ever wanted anything. {Y/n} could of easily gotten in trouble for her aditude but she never cared, she was under the control of the royal family yes but wasn't a servant.
"If anyone knows you do, it's me." Ryoma said, going back to their conversation.
They made small talk until they reached two large doors. Beyond here was the audience chamber, where her skills would be assessed. Ryoma placed his hand over her shoulder, giving a reassuring squeeze. "Good luck." He said. {Y/n} nodded then took in a deep breath before entering, holding herself high. She came to a stop then did a small bow before speaking.
"King Sumeragi, for years I have pledged my service to Hoshido much like my father before me." She said, receiving a short nod from Sumeragi.
"I know {Y/n}, your father was a highly trusted friend." He said.
