John nearly choked on his food he had quickly been eating. He blinked his eyes, wiping the corners of his mouth with the cloth provided to him.

"Ah, not quite." He mumbled, fidgeting with the cloth before putting it back on the table. "My mother, when she was still with us, she would taunt about how picky I was." He forced a small smile. "With anything, really. Food, clothes....She once said I'd have to settle for something less than my standards." He paused for a second.

His mind ran wild. He knew that what he was about to say would definitely cause a stir. "Perhaps," He glanced over to Alexander for a short moment before meeting eyes with Eliza. "That's just what I did."

The table went silent for a moment before Eliza broke it. "Well, I believe that wraps up this." She hummed, standing up. She began to take the plates before Philip followed in her tracks.

Once out of ear shot and visibility, Alexander shot his eyes to John. "What was that?" He whispered in an almost stern voice. John simply shrugged. "She asked a question. I answered it. There's no issue with that."

Alex raised an eyebrow. "Less than your standards? What's that supposed to mean?" He questioned. "Am I not sufficient?" John hummed, standing to his feet.

"That's not the issue, Alexander." He paused, pushing his chair in. "I'm going after a married man with a child. If you're willing to cheat on your wife for someone like me, you're definitely below my standards." He looked at him. "You're willing to give away your happily marriaged life for what? To get hanged?" He shook his head. "I have to go."

Alexander tried to protest, but by the time he tried to, John had already left. He stared at the door. Eliza's voice broke his stance. "Why did he leave?" She questioned.

Alex turned. "Ah, he remembered he had an appointment." He smiled. "Forgetful as always." Alex started to walk towards his office. "If you need me, you know where I'll be." He walked inside, closing the doors.

He made his way to his desk, wanting to pound on it from pure frustration. Yes, he was cheating on his wife, but he wished to divorce her. She had an affair while he was fighting in the war.

Was it wrong for him to want an escape?
