"Just so you know, I'm still pissed at you, but this is tradition, so I had to show up," Deja announced as she walked into Kadence's apartment, fake scowl firmly in place.
Kadence just chuckled. "Pissed at me for what, exactly?"
Deja flopped onto the couch, rolling her eyes. "Don't act clueless."
Kadence grabbed a slice of pizza from the box on the coffee table, already guessing where this was headed.
"We're still on the Sire the Don situation, huh?"
"Of course we are! You were in the same room as the man of my dreams and, as my best friend, your first instinct wasn't to call me?" Deja's voice went up a notch.
Kadence grinned. "I seriously thought the picture I took would save me from this little guilt trip."
"It didn't. If you'd called me, I could've been in that picture. See the difference?"
Kadence laughed, leaning into Deja's theatrics. "Alright, so what do I have to do to make this up to you?"
"Simple: take his offer," Deja replied instantly.
Kadence rolled her eyes, not sure if it was at Deja or herself. "I'm still thinking about it," she said, flipping through channels to find the MMA broadcast.
The MMAs, short for Music & Media Awards, were one of the industry's biggest annual shows, where artists, producers, and creators from all genres were recognized for their impact and talent. For Kadence and Deja, it was tradition to watch the show together, dissecting every performance, outfit, and acceptance speech like they were the ones handing out the trophies.
"What's there to think about? That man is fine," Deja swooned.
Kadence shook her head. "His looks have nothing to do with it, Deja."
"Okay, maybe not. But why are you hesitating?" Deja pressed, seeing right through her.
Kadence sighed. "I just want to make sure I'm making the right decision, that's all."
Deja turned to face her fully. "Besides the money, what else is really on the table?"
Kadence considered. "He hasn't spelled it out, but I think he's letting me have creative control over the choreography. He even said I could choreograph the other dancers. And honestly? He's been really patient."
"So let me get this straight," Deja said, ticking off on her fingers. "You get to work with a fine, patient man, you get creative control, and you'll be choreographing the whole thing. Forgive me for not understanding what you're stalling for."
Kadence opened her mouth, but the show started, saving her from answering. "Oh, look, the awards are on," she said, grateful for the change in topic.
Deja wasn't so easily distracted. As the MMA's kicked off, she kept shooting Kadence pointed looks, clearly not ready to drop it.
