Alec's senses slowly came back to him. The first thing he felt was pain in his chest and arm, but it was dull as if something kept him from feeling everything clearly. He was also able to hear noises, they sounded like voices, but he couldn't be sure. It was like there was a wall of cotton, keeping everything from reaching his brain.
He was lying on something soft. The voices were becoming clearer, but still only sounded muffled in his ears. As Alec was getting more and more aware of his body the pain also got more and more intense, every breath fueling the fire in his chest.
But it wasn't all-consuming, it was there but he was able to think, to hear his sister talking distressed to someone "He's been unconscious for far too long now. Why isn't he waking up?" Alec wanted to tell her that she shouldn't worry, that he was going to be fine. But he felt too weak to open his eyes or open his mouth to let a sound come out.
"Panicking isn't going to make it better, Isabelle," Magnus voice was audible next to him, he sounded more tired and exhausted than Alec remembered him ever being. He could recognize Catarina's voice but wasn't able to make out what she said, slowly drifting back to sleep.
The next time he woke up everything was clearer than before and the pain wasn't so intense anymore. Alec just lay there for a minute, collecting strength to open his eyes. He felt that someone was holding his left hand and that he wasn't able to use the other one, something restricting his movements. Not that he felt like moving.
When he finally opened his eyes Alec was met with a dimly lit room. He recognized it as one of the institute's treatment rooms. But when he saw Magnus sitting next to him, looking deeply relieved, he only concentrated on him. His first thought was to tell his love to go to bed, who looked like he hadn't slept in days.
"Alexander," his voice was soft, yet exhausted and his smile was one that followed hours of worry, but was honest nonetheless. "You gave us quite the scare." Magnus reached out and caressed his cheek, to which Alec closed his eyes for a second.
He was unsure about trying to speak. Maybe it would ignite the pain in his chest and he also felt exhausted, like he could go back to sleep with just closing his eyes. That was when it hit him. How long had he been out? What had happened? Was Lilith defeated?
"What happened?" he spoke low, hoping that would lessen the pain. He did feel a burn, but it was nothing compared to the agony he had felt directly after the fight. He wondered once again how much time had passed, but that was not important right now.
"Lilith tried to attack Simon," Magnus started to explain, looking deeply sad when he ended the sentence "Which caused an explosion. Clary didn't survive." Alec looked at him for a moment, not sure what to say. Clary was dead?
As much as he had disliked the redhead at the beginning she had grown on him. He wasn't the closest to her, but he knew he would miss the presence of the small woman. An aggrieved silence followed before Magnus went on talking.
"The possessed mundanes were released once Lilith was destroyed. They don't remember anything and Luke has worked with the praetor to relocate them since all of them were suspected of murder by the police."
Alec nodded a bit. So this threat had been eliminated. Since Magnus hadn't mentioned any other casualties he suspected that Clary was the only one. All the people that had been involved rattled in his head. Izzy, Jace being the most important to him. Were they fine? Before he was able to ask, the door to the room opened and a stressed, but nonetheless pretty as always, Isabelle walked in. She seemed unharmed, which lifted a stone off Alec's chest. Seeing his little sister alive and kicking was immediately making him feel better.
