When Brooke finally made it to her house, she stood on her doorstep for a moment. She wouldn't admit it, but she was legitimately scared to go inside. Although her parents had never hurt her physically, she was scared it would be different.
Sure, she had gotten into fights before, but she had always managed to talk her way out of getting a phone call home in the first place. But for some reason, today was different. She just didn't have the strength to argue.
Brooke finally placed her hand on the doorknob and turned it slowly to the right. The door silently swung open, revealing her mother sitting on the couch. The woman was reading, with some tv program on in the background.
The blonde quietly made her way inside, making sure to stay out of her mother's sight. Her plan failed when she stepped on one of her dog's squeaky toys. It made a loud sound, causing her mother to turn around.
"Brooke, you scared me!" The older woman exclaimed, hand placed over her heart. She then tilted her head in a confused manner. "Aren't you supposed to be at school?"
The girl slightly bit her bottom lip, thinking, Fuck! Ok, this is fine, I'll explain and she'll side with me. It'll all be fine. But, another part of her couldn't help but think, She's going to murder me. She's going to actually kill me.
She tried her best to ignore her inner voices and answered her mother.
"Yeah, well you see, I kinda maybe got into a fight and broke a kid's nose." She let the last part out all at once. "He really deserved it though! And I might've been suspended for two days. Ok, bye!"
After finishing her very quick explanation, Brooke attempted to escape into her room upstairs. She was unfortunately stopped by her mother's voice.
"Excuse me?" She demanded. Brooke could've sworn she saw fire behind the woman's eyes. She braved herself for a lecture on how she should've been the bigger person, but those weren't the next words that came out of her mother's mouth.
"Why would you do that? Now every one will think our family is a bunch of barbarians!"
"He said something really rude to me!" Brooke fought back. She couldn't believe all her mother could think about was her family's image.
"Jesus Christ, why can't we just get rid of you already?" The woman showed no sign of regret at her words.
Brooke was left speechless. She had heard these words through her bedroom walls, but never to her face. This added a whole other layer of pain. And she knew the woman in front of her was sober, as she didn't daytime drink.
The worst part was that her mother meant it. She meant what she said so much that Brooke couldn't help but believe it as well. Why am I still around?
She didn't say anything as she took her hand, grabbed her mother's book, and threw it across the room. The girl knew that it was childish, but she just needed to throw or hit something. She turned around and ran out the door, slamming it shit behind her.
