Brooke woke up to the sound of a door slamming open. She had decided to take a nap until James got home. She hadn't been sleeping much the past few weeks and decided to take advantage of the opportunity.

"Brooke? Why are you here?" James, who had just walked in, questioned. He seemed concerned.

"Well, I might've broken a kid's nose. I also might've gotten suspended for the rest of the week." She told him the truth.

James slightly shook his head, chuckling under his breath. His friend had always managed to get into fights, although she had never gotten in much trouble before. Probably because they were mainly verbal fights.

"You still didn't answer my question." The boy fully made his way into the bedroom, shutting the door behind him. "Why aren't you at home?"

Brooke inwardly groaned, as she was hoping she'd successfully avoided the question. She threw herself backwards into the bed, staring up at the white ceiling.

James tossed his backpack onto his desk chair and sat down behind Brooke. The boy gently took her head and placed it on his lap. He proceeded to play with her hair, waiting for an explanation.

"I ran away." At the look of shock on her best friend's face, Brooke quickly clarified, "only for a day or so! I just couldn't be there right now."

"Why? What happened?" James asked intently.

"My mom just decided to tell me what she's been thinking since I was born. When I told her what happened at school, she exploded and told me she wished that she could give me away or something."

At the sight of tears forming in Brooke's eyes, James quickly lifted her head up, went in front of her, and wrapped his arms tightly around the blonde. The girl quickly reciprocated the hug.

The two stayed like that for a few minutes. Brooke cried into James's shoulder, incoherently sobbing thoughts she would normally keep inside. James rubbed her back, squeezing her tightly. He reassured her, letting her know that everything would work out. He reminded her that no matter what, he would be there for her.

When Brooke managed to somewhat pull herself together, she released James from the death grip she previously had him in. She gave the boy in front of her a smile, silently thanking him.

James gave a small smile in return, letting himself forget about the fact that he had let his walls down. He felt Brooke's hand on his left wrist. The touch made him smile a bit more.

"You still wear this?" The girl asked in a small voice.

"Of course I do." The bracelet meant a lot to James. Brooke has given it to him when they were only nine, after he had stuck his hand in the deep-fat fryer. He hadn't taken it off since.
