"Alex, I'm so sorry! I have no choice!" I could barely see through the tears streaming down my face and it really wasn't helping that the wind and rain had rapidly picked up.
"There is always a choice, Clara" he growled. I noticed how he hadn't used the familiar nickname I had become so used to over the last few months, instead he sounded so formal and withdrawn. His posture hard and unforgiving, I tried to reach for him but he shrugged out of my hold. I felt as though my entire world was falling apart.
"I have to go with them! I'm doing this for you, my father will ruin you and I can't live with that knowing I could have done something to protect you!" I was practically hysterical.
"I don't need protecting" he roared causing me to flinch, I could see the instant regret in his eyes as soon as the words left his mouth.
"So, what does this mean for us? We can still talk, I don't want you out of my life, I just have to go with them!"
"There is no us Clara, there never was. This would never have worked, you're you, with all your class and inheritance and opportunities and me... well I'm as your father so kindly put it... I'm trash" He practically spat the last words.
"Please Alex, I don't want to leave like this!"
"Go home Clara, we're done here"
And that was that. No sooner had Alex Fury came crashing into my life in a whirlwind of emotion, he had left. He just turned, walked away and left me standing at the side of a road with the rain beating down on me.
