Present day
Eleven years ago was the last time I saw Alex Fury. The memories of him still crash over me like waves crashing on rocks. I always wonder what happened to him, I had tried to reach out initially but he wouldn't take my calls so eventually I just stopped. Everything stopped.
What have I done in that time? Nothing good, that's for sure.
I could almost laugh at how my life has turned out. The infamous Clara Montgomery was homeless at twenty nine. Well, technically that wasn't true, I had chosen to run away. However, if you were being emotionally manipulated by your husband all whilst everyone else turning a blind eye, then I think most people would leave too.
My father had thought Charles Battersy was perfect marriage material for me, even though I didn't have much say in the matter regardless. Charles was from a wealthy family too therefore that was all I needed to know. Life was good for a few years, the pain of losing Alex was easing, I never forgot him, but I managed to get on with life. However, when it became known I didn't want to have children with Charles, life wasn't so good after all.
I'd become accustomed to the daily shoves and nasty words being spat at me, and then one night when it all got too much, I ran. I ran as hard as I could and somehow I ended up back on a bus to Maple Valley. I had no where to go, no real friends, definitely no family to turn to. So I went to the only place where I felt truly at home. Maple Valley.
