Erika stood rooted to the ground, staring intently at a picture of a couple on the wall. What had caught her eye wasn’t the heart drawn on it with the words ‘Hiro’ and ‘Yui’. It wasn’t even the younger looking – happier looking – Hiro that was staring back at her. No, what had taken her breath away was the girl beside him. A girl who looked exactly like her.
‘Truly, deeply, madly.’ Erika read out loud.
Knock. Knock.
Letting out a sigh, she put her book down and placed her glasses on top. ‘Come in.’
The door opened and in came a buoyant Sayu-chan.
‘Onee-chan! He asked me out! He asked me out!’
Smiling at her sister’s energy, Erika looked at her fondly. ‘Calm down Sayu. Who asked you out?’
‘Ryu! Ryu Nikishido. Only the cutest, smartest boy in school!’
‘The one you proposed to in kindergarten?’
‘YES!’ Sayu screamed happily and pulled her sister into a mini dance.
‘Haha! Hahaha!’ The two were laughing hard as they waltzed across the room.
‘Oh!’ Sayu stopped abruptly causing Erika to lose her balance. ‘What am I going to wear?!’
‘Itai.’ Erika mumbled as she fell to the floor.
Ignoring her, Sayu began pacing about. ‘What am I going to wear?!’
‘Umm… a little help here?’
‘Gomen, onee-chan,’ Sayu apologized as she rushed out of the room. ‘I have to
go!’
‘Eh? Leaving me like this?!’
Realizing her sister was out of earshot, she picked herself up, ‘Hmph! People in love are so inconsiderate!’
Though she complained, Erika was truly happy for her sister. Her eyes darted towards the book she was reading, Beauty and the Beast.
‘Truly, deeply, madly huh? Is that how it is to fall in love?’

Hiro stepped into the Angel Song. He hadn’t been in here since the ‘incident’ and
it felt unfamiliar to him. He scanned the room and soon found what he was looking for.
‘Yui-chan…’
He approached the picture of him and a girl. For a while, he stood there as if time had stood still. Then his memories took him back…
Pricks of light brightened the black canvas that was night. All around the busy life of the city was coming to an end.
On the hospital roof, a young couple huddled together against the coolness of the night. The boy was whispering something to the girl when she gave a sudden jerk.
‘Look!’ She pointed at the sky. ‘It’s a shooting star! Quick, we have to make a wish!’
Immediately after her outburst, she held her hands together and closed her eyes tightly. The boy watched her in amusement as she muttered softly.
Opening her eyes, she asked, ‘What did you wish for oppa?’
‘Well… if I told you, it wouldn’t come true now would it?’
‘But–‘
‘Uh-uh.’
‘But –’
Chuckling, ‘Alright, alright. I’ll tell you, but if it doesn’t come true, I’m blaming you.’
‘Fine! Don’t tell me then.’ Pouting, the girl folded her arms and turned away from him.
‘Are you sure? You really don’t want to know?’
Not getting a response, the boy pretended to leave. ‘Well, let’s get going then.’
‘Matte. What is it?’
‘What is what?’
‘Oppa.’ The girl whined.
Chuckling once again, the boy sat back down.
‘My wish is that Yui-chan and I can one day go to the beach.’
A smile began to form on the girl’s face, ‘That would be nice, Hiro oppa.’
‘Yui-chan…doushite?’
Hiro continued to stand in front of the picture for several more minutes before leaving. Just as he closed the door, he whispered, ‘I’ll see you soon, Yui. I’ll see you soon.’
