‘What am I going to do?’ Erika asked Shun.
The pair sat on the beach watching the waves toss back and forth.
‘You should let them know.’ Shun answered.
Erika had just come from the hospital. It had been her second visit since she received the letter. The doctor explained that when she had hit her head on the rock, the impact had damaged her retina. The only solution now was to have an eye transplant. Erika had kept this from her family and had confided only in Shun.
‘There’s nothing they can do even if they found out.’ She remarked.
‘They can be there for you.’
‘I rather they aren’t. That way, nobody gets hurt in the end.’
‘Like with Hiro?’
Erika didn’t answer.
‘Erika-chan, no man’s an island. We need other people. Even if some hurt us, betray us, or simply don’t return our feelings, we still need them. Erika-chan, you’re going to meet people who will hurt you. Sometimes, even those close to you will hurt you. But you have to understand humans are not perfect, they make mistakes, but we all try our best. Don’t let one experience judge how you view your other relationships. At the end of the day, your family will be there for you. So will your friends. So will I.’
‘Why? Why do you guys try so hard?’
‘Because we love you.’ Shun replied as he pulled her into an embrace.

Ding dong ding dong. Dong dong dong.
School had finished for the day and Yuri was just about to head home.
‘Matte, Yuri-san!’
Yuri turned around and came face to face with Hiro Mizushima.
‘Hiro-san?’ Yuri asked uncertainly as he tried to remember the man who saved Erika. ‘Nande?’
‘I haven’t seen Erika-chan in a while. I’m going to be leaving soon and I had something important to tell her. Do you mind giving this to her?’ Hiro pulled out an envelope from his pocket and handed it to Yuri.
‘Ummm…sure. Is there anything else?’
‘No, that’s everything. Thank you so much.’ Hiro bowed deeply as he spoke.
‘Please don’t, it’s only a message.’
‘No. It means everything to me.’ Hiro thanked her once more before leaving.
As soon as he was out of sight, Yuri tore the letter open. Her eyes widened as she read its content. Smirking evilly, she ripped the letter to shreds and tossed the pieces in the air.
An eye for an eye, Erika-chan.

‘Hai, hai. I’ll be there right away. Thank you very much doctor.’ Beaming, Erika hung up the phone and turned to the anxious faces that surrounded her.
‘They found someone!’ The moment she told them the news, they sprung up from their seats and hugged her.
She had listened to Shun and had told her family about her eyes. True enough, they had supported her as her sight began to fade. And now finally, their fight was over. As she reminiscent, she caught the eyes of her sister who gave her a wink. Shortly after she had told them about her eye condition, she and her sister had reconciled and Erika couldn’t be happier. Now as she stood amidst the joyous chattering of her family, Erika finally realized what Sayu must’ve felt when she called her selfish. It wasn’t her life to take. From the moment she was born, her life had ceased to be hers – no even before that. It belonged to her family, to her friends, to everyone she has met, and to everyone she will meet.

ContoA story I had previously posted in Winglin back in 2009/2010. This was intended to be a movie script so it's a bit shorter and faster than a regular novel. Credits to angeLLina of Intrinsic for the poster!
