This is a small poem written for a beautiful young lady with Spina Bifida who was unable to walk or communicate well on her own. When she was young she had a small plush toy in her bed that was with her all the time. She loved that toy and affectionately called it 'Yellow'. This tale tries to image what she might have thought of her best friend and what conversations she may have imagined.
I met a new friend that no other can hear
I watched him and held him close to my ear
Look at him, he's so soft and he's such an odd fellow
You know what I'll do; I'll call him my Yellow
He never talks back and he listens like Daddy
He never eats food but he makes me feel funny
My friend tells me jokes and makes me feel silly
And he always is there when sad thoughts come to find me
My yellow's a friend I can talk to at night
Whispering soft words when no one's in sight
Yellow takes me away from my fears and my pain
Like sitting with a friend in the soft falling rain
Good night little Yellow, don't cry or be sad
Cause I'll always be here and I'll never be mad
Go to sleep Mellow Yellow ... I'll close my eyes first
Cause today's not so bad and tomorrow no worse
