The name's Piper Taryn, and I am an orphan here in New York City, New York. I never knew my mother and my father left me at the age of seven and has wanted nothing to do with me since. I've been on my own since then, but now I am sixteen and staying with a foster family, the Connors.

I walked up the stairs to the front door of the house, but I couldn't even get in the front door before Max, their German rottweiler, started barking. "Max, hush!" I commanded, but he wouldn't shut up. I had to tell him three times to go lay down and be quiet before he listened to me. "Max," I said, "You're going to get me in trouble with Mr. and Mrs. Connor." I snuck up to my room, but I suddenly felt a hand on my shoulder and pinned them to the ground, holding them in an arm-bar. "What are you doing, Piper?"I recognized that voice, "Jackson?" I questioned without letting go. "Yeah, it's me. Now will you please let me go?" He asked sarcastically trying to fight out of the hold. "How do I know it's really you?" "Ask me something that only the two of us know about." I thought for a moment before I answered, "Okay, then who is my favorite book character?" The guy hesitated for a moment before I started counting. "1," I tightened my grip. "2," As I was about to say three, the guy answered, "Loki, Norse god of Mischief." He said, so I let him go. "Why are you even out this late, Piper?" "None of your business, Jackson." I entered my room without another word, leaving Jackson in the hallway alone with Max.

The next morning, I went downstairs for breakfast and I immediately got questioned. "So what happened last night, Piper? You still weren't home by the time I went to bed last night." Mrs. Connor asked as I serves myself some waffles, hash-browns, eggs, bacon, and ham. "I had been out with some friends, that's all." I sat down at the table as I ripped up some meat for Max. "You know your curfew is between 11:30 and midnight depending on where you're going. You weren't home until after two o'clock in the morning!" Mr. Connor had a temper like any other man in his late thirties, but he went from zero to one hundred real quick. "I know sir." was all I said before the door bell rang. "Max, hush!" Jackson commanded as his father answered the door. "Is there a Piper Taryn here?"
