Chapter 2

The cool winter breeze flowed through the tent, sending chills down her spin. Eilstina awoke from the breeze, whipping the sleep from her eyes, she made her way outside. She turned back and looked in the tent at Vicven’s still motionless body. It’s been to long she thought. It had been nearly two weeks since the fight with the creature. She had so many questions she wanted to ask him. Yet they would have to wait.

She began her usual routine for the day. The traps were in need of checking, cause without Vicven hunting it was her job to keep them feed. She walked to the fire, and staked more wood on the ember. She waited for them to catch fire so she could place bigger wood on it. The wait seemed to take forever, she had things to do today and wait for this wood wasn’t one of them. She walked five feet from the fire pit, raising her hand. She began to concentrate on fire. This was to be her training today. She had been training every day since the fight.

“Naur!” she said forcefully. The fire erupted from her hand engulfing the wood in a blaze of burning light. The loss of energy sent her to the ground. It would take some time before she would be as good as she had been before. Waiting a minute before moving, Eilstina managed to make her way to her feet.

She picked up her new staff, and began her journey to the traps. She admired her staff as she walked. On the outside of the staff was maple, so it could be gripped easier. The inside of the staff was made of dragon tongue, dragon tongue was used as a core for two reasons, it gave extra fire damage and then it was used to remember the first hand that touched it. Eilstina hadn’t been the first to touch it, but she had been around staffs all her life. She had managed to reverse the staff’s memory, which took some time, seeing how this staff was at least two centuries old. On top of the staff was a ruby, but not just any ruby, this one was designed especially for clerics who specialized in fire. The ruby was filled with dragon fire, not easy to obtain. It helped cause great fire damage, and would always give you light.

The trip didn’t take as long as it had the first time. She had made her way down this very trail at least three times every day. As she neared the traps she heard the sound of squeaks and shrieks. Her mood lightened she would only have to make this trip once today.

Eilstina approached the cages hidden behind the bushes. The cages rattled as the animals tried to escape. She had placed three cages here, a big one and two little one. In the bigger cage, that shook the most vigorously, a hog had managed to get itself captured. This brought a smile to her face; it would provide them with a fair amount of meat. One of the little ones had been triggered yet it was empty. The creature must have gotten away. Oh well she thought the hog would make for a good meal or two. Her mood had definitely increased since the attempt with the fire just a few short hours ago. The second small cage was sprung; it contained two rabbits and a squirrel.

“A squirrel?” she said aloud. What would a squirrel be doing following two rabbits? The question faded from her mind as she turned her attention to the hog, which was still making plenty of noise. She was hesitant on killing a living life form, but it had to be done.

“Rurtha!” she pointed her staff at the hog. The hog stopped shaking immediately and started at her. It began to smoke and blister, as its skin became its own prison of fire. Its eyes roasted in the sockets, its ears melted off of its head. Eilstina backed away, the smell was horrible. She knew that this sight would give her bad dreams tonight; she hoped this feeling of sadness would die away after a while. She thought who would want to feel sadness when having to kill to survive.
