i watch in awe as kai takes his seat next to me. his jumper is tied around his waist, and his arms are covered in blue.
looking at him, i notice the paint also on his face.
the urge to ask about a dozen questions was obvious by the frown forming on my face, but i fight it.
and instead of asking those dozen questions, i give kai his now-finished math paper with a small smile.
he turns to me, returning my smile and i watch as he fiddles with his phone before setting it on the desk.
his phone flashes a number, and i read the contact name. my frown deepening, i force myself to ask, "why is my brother calling you?"
his eyes widen slightly, and he looks at his phone briefly before declining the call.
when i realise kai never answered me, a pit forms in my stomach. what is he hiding?
"kai, what's going on?"
he looks at me with a guilty expression, but masks it quickly with a smile, "it's nothing, leo."
he places a hand over my own, and my cheeks flush. i manage to pull my hand away, and i pack my things up.
standing up, i take my finished math paper to the teacher at the front of the room, and head for the door. i can't resist the urge to take a quick look at kai.
when i do, his eyes are already on me. he's watching me carefully, deep in thought. he looks as if he's studying my every move, and it makes my stomach flip.
the truth is, i'm hurt by kai- and he knows.
i take a deep breath and walk away from school. i start heading towards home, but the vibration in my pocket distracts me. i pull my phone out, declining kai's call.
i decide to take the long route home, avoiding the sketchy alleyway which i don't feel like going through alone.
but not before long, i realise this was the worst route to take. as a group of guys come into view, i contemplate turning back.
but they've already seen me now.
i curse in my head, my feet coming to halt. i want to run, but i can't. instead, i let fear take over and i freeze as they begin walking towards me.
however, before they get too close, something grabs me. or, someone.
"elliot!" kai yells, and soon enough he's running away, dragging me by the arm.
i struggle to match his speed as he's much faster than me, but i try. i take a quick glance behind us, and notice they're almost catching up.
tears are close to forming in my eyes, but i blink hard and focus on running.
after a short while, i'm sure we've lost them, and kai yanks my arm right, forcing me to follow him up another street.
he pulls me into a gap between two buildings. the library and an old building which hadn't been in use for years.
i huff, coming to a stop and kai pushes me against the wall of the library.
"kai." i state, trying to catch my breath.
he gulps, "yeah, yeah. i gotta explain. i know." it goes quiet, and i can't find the words to say. we're both focussed on catching our breath.
i tilt my head, waiting for him to talk. but he only takes a step towards me.
with his body now flush against mine, i'm positive he can feel my heart pounding.
and although i can blame that on the running; i can't explain the redness which is becoming more and more apparent on my face.
is this payback for the flour incident?
i smile thinking about the last time we were in this sort of situation. kai's hand easily finds its way to my face, and his thumb moves gently over my cheek.
my breath shallows, and i find myself staring at his lips. he licks them slowly, almost teasingly, and i watch as his own eyes flicker down to mine.
instinctively, i lean in. attempting to get closer to his face.
and i watch as he smiles.
before stepping away.
