i look over at elliot, who's busy finishing his lunch. we were currently sat in the school field, eating our lunch because the cafeteria was too full.
"it's like...a picnic!" he exclaims, his mouth full of bread.
"it's exactly like that, leo." i laugh.
he only nods enthusiastically as i shove the rest of my cookie in my mouth. it didn't taste too good, but elliot gave it to me, so i accepted it gratefully.
i hadn't really seen much of elliot since friday, when i went to his to pick him up. i suggested we watch a movie at the theatre, and he jumped up and down as if i'd just asked him to marry me.
although, we hardly looked at the movie once; we were busy competing to see who could throw the most popcorn into some lady's funny hat.
after debating who won, (which was obviously me, yet elliot still disagrees) we went out to get dinner which we just chose to grab on the way back to his house, as he had to be back to look after jake- his mom's request.
i walked him home, and we sat on his couch eating our cheap meal. jake sat in front of us, playing some video game. elliot's mom frantically moved around, trying to get ready.
i remember elliot asking me what happened on friday, and why i had to meet him later. but i didn't have an excuse ready, so i tried dodging the question. i'm pretty sure it worked too, because he didn't bring the topic up again.
until just now, when elliot hit me in the face when throwing his crust at me. "kai!" he yelled, pouting. he looked like a lost puppy, and i resisted the urge to call him cute.
"huh?" i say, shaking the thoughts from my mind.
"you zoned out again." he states, unamused. i only shrug at this, making him sigh. "are you okay?"
i smile at his sincerity, "yeah, i'm a little tired." my smile turns into a frown as soon as the sentence leaves my lips. why'd i lie to him?
i watch as elliot throws his leftovers in the trash behind us. but sighs when he comes back, realising he had to make two trips to the trashcan when i sheepishly hand him my own.
when elliot comes back, he just sits and stares at me. he almost looks like he's analysing me, with his eyes narrowed and clearly deep in thought. but before i can ask him why, the bell rings, signalling end of lunch.
we both stand up, and i dust off the crumbs from my pants.
"math?" i ask, he nods and pulls my arm in the opposite direction we subconsciously began walking in.
"see you later." elliot says, beginning to walk away. i quickly grab his hand, making him spin to face me.
i smile guiltily, "are we meeting after school?"
"if you want." he says, shrugging.
"anytime after 4." i tell him, and walk away before he can ask me why.
=====
after sitting through my painfully long classes, i head straight to detention.
when i get there, the teacher looks up to smile. i nod in her direction, and sit myself down, pulling out my earphones.
i stick my playlist on and beginning writing down some math formulas on the sheet of paper in front of me.
i rush through the questions, trying to get them over with. but i'm distracted when the door opens.
the boy casually walks in, sitting beside me. he doesn't say a word, but he studies my face.
as i'm about to ask him a question, he leans forward, pointing to my answer sheet.
"question four is three hundred and fifteen."
i gulp, looking down at my answers.
42% of 750? i hardly think about it before crossing out my answer and changing it to what he said.
i was going to ask him a question, but i don't remember what it was.
oh, "uh, why are you here?" i ask, awkwardly.
he shrugs, "i don't know."
"leo." i state, flatly.
"okay, fine! i asked."
i raise an eyebrow, trying not to laugh, "you asked?"
he shrugs again, this time raising his hands, "jake told me you'd be here."
"that little sucker!" i whisper-yell, grinning.
elliot only shakes his head at this, beginning to giggle.
"i'm guessing you want an explanation."
elliot nods, looking down. i watch him carefully as he takes my sheet, and starts working out the answers i haven't done.
it's only then i notice that he's already completed his sheet. i chuckle, shaking my head. this kid really likes math.
