He used to have a mask that he would wear to cover the scars on his face (the Joker-like ones). He wore it for two reasons:
1 - To keep people from staring and asking questions.
2 - He used to have a habit of picking and scratching at the stitches and scar tissue around the wounds, to the point were they would re-open and get infected. Liu figured that if he covered them up with something, he wouldn't be tempted to scratch at them, which worked. He stopped wearing it once they'd healed completely.
