"The truth hurts, lie to me..."
Mahika shifted nervously on her feet as she stood in front of her mother's apartment door. This was the first time she's coming to visit her since the death of Miandra. Mahika didn't want to be around her mother, let alone her father. She's been finding comfort in Achilles but Marilyn has been none stop pestering her to come visit.Making sure her jersey hid the still faint bruises on her skin, Mika knocked softly on the door and waited impatiently.
Hearing the locks turn followed by the knob, Marilyn opened the door suprised to see her daughter.
"So you decided to stop by now?" Marilyn scolded, placing her hand on her hip.
"You've been bugging me haven't you mama?" She retorted.
"Watch your tone gal. And what happened to your eye, why you have a plaster?"
Freezing for a second, Mika cleared her throat." I was being clumsy mama. Can I come in?"
Stepping to the side, Marilyn allowed her daughter into her home before closing the door.
Mahika instantly smelled the strong carribean aromas in the air reminding her of home on Barbados.
"Who you cooking for-?"Mahika halted when seeing her father sitting at the dinner table in the fourth chair that has been empty for years.
He casually sipped on his red wine before a smile graced his face." Hey my baby."
Mahika turned hastly around to face her mother." What is he doing here?"
"Mahika please, he's just having dinner-"
"Why ma!?"
"Simmer your voice down Mika." Darnell sneers.
"I wasn't talking to you." She snaps.
Marilyn gasped." I don't know who you're talking to, but you really better watch your tone!"
"Marilyn, how about you go check on the food. Mahika and I will talk."
Marilyn nods, strolling into the kitchen to tend to the food. Mika hesitantly takes a seat across from her father in her chair, staring down at her lap.
She would have walked right out the door once seeing her father but she owed the visit to her mother.
"You haven't been answering my calls and texts." Darnell speaks, breaking the silence.
"There's no reason for us to be talking." She mumbles.
"There's every reason Mahika..." He grits." I lost Miandra before I could patch our relationship, my daughter is dead and she left this earth to believe her father was a fuck up. I'm trying to show you how much I want to have a father-daughter relationship before this cold world takes you away. I didn't even know you was running around with a grown man! A thug at that!"
Scoffing at the last statement, she rolled her eyes but the mention of her sister has Mahika sinking in her chair as she sniffles. Just the thought of death has her melancholy. Her sister's funeral was beyond depressing , the cold weather and the few family members dressed in black. Then she attended Liandra's funeral to comfort Achilles, he was emotionless during the entire service. Then finally Amir's funeral out of respect for his sister Amina and Francesca.
